What Twist and What Bullet to Use In 22-250 For Deer?

OP is in Ontario....... we don't have 100 pound black tails here.......

Nope you've got 140lb whitetails you never shoot past 100yds as I get from many posts. We also regularly shoot deer that weigh 250-300lbs on the hoof and put on a few miles and many thousands of feet of elevation doing it. So when someone says it's been done, it's effective and I'd do it again then pay attention. Especially if you've never done it yourself.

Modern bullets are not made out of magical unicorn dust...... they still need powder to be propelled and a case and primer.....

I always get a chuckle when I read stuff like this..... guys that have full confidence and preach the killing power of a small bore all while telling stories of all of the huge animals it drops in its tracks like lightening...... but then all of a sudden a grizzly is some kind of magical stop sign...

Again, because their is a difference between talking a calmed down shot across the cutblock at something you'll eat versus having to stop something from eating you at feet in the same cutblock. If you can't grasp it, again it's because you've never been there.

I've used the 22-250 with 45gr barnes just fine. Made holes out both sides and a mess in between. If I was deer hunting the BC interior it'd be a gun I'd grab without issue.

In AB I've got a .243AI zipping 80gr TTSXs that's killed 4 deer now without issue out to 420yds now. All.died very quick and easy. That gun will likely go elk and sheep hunting as well. My daughter has used it to.grratveffect so far.

Of course it did, you spined it. A 22 mag would've done the same.

125gr. BT out of a 300WSM on big game is silly IMO and results are as expected.

Like I said, fill yer boots, but I won't use them. I get enough practice tracking. :)

While that one was hit in the spine, the other deer and the bear were double lung shots that resulted in lung soup. :)

All wrong about Ontario....... we have everything from hardwoods to mixed bush to bean and cornfields....... you preach gaining practical experience using a cartridge or caliber for game and not listening to the interwebs then do the exact opposite.....

Be careful...... just because someone is from somewhere doesn't mean it's the only place he has been....... my choice is a personal choice based on personal experience and personal guidelines....... again, if what you are doing is legal then fill your boots if it suits you to do so.....

Have you ever actually used centerfire 22's on big game?

Personally no....... but I do have lots of experience with them on wolves, coyotes, hogs and such.... partitions included..... and have seen their performance.... I don't think I would have a "personal" issue using them on antelope, which has been mentioned many times.....

Sure you sure? Because my Internet experience says you're wrong. I'm pretty sure I read it right. You can't see further than 39yds in any direction and your deer and coyotes run neck and neck for body size.

But then again I've never actually hunted in Ontario so it's likely I'm talking right....out.....of.....my....ass.

Irony.

Well..... I have taken many animals with 22's and 6mm's ...... seen the animals reaction..... seen the wound channels etc..... so I make my own personal choice based on my experience....... again, for the unpteenth time...... fill your boots........

You make a call on a province based on internet posts and conjecture...... with zero experience.....

Your handle is rem338win....... I have one, except it's a ruger...... now if you want to talk irony........

It's funny when you have to look for irony and still don't find it.

Analyze my handle more, because it's funny.

So if I shoot some song dogs with a .375 or a .458 I should get a good idea of what it'll do in Africa? I have got to try this out.

Just thinking out loud. My mind wanders in retirement, I have a 12 twist stainless barrel already chambered. I realize a .243 is better but I already have one of them.

Back to the original question, if I was going to build a .22-250 for game up to and including whitetails and Black bears I'd probably pick a 1-10. It should shoot the lighter bullets acceptably still but hopefully would shoot very well with the 62 grain TTSX(maybe even 70). Worst case scenario any one of a number of 55-70 grain soft points should shoot acceptably and even if I had to let off the throttle to ensure better penetration they'll work if placed where a bullet should go.

Out of curiosity, why are you lumping black bear in the same category of suitable cartridges as whitetail?

Because lots of us have found both are killed comparably easily. 300lb Blackies don't actually grow on trees either.

If I was in BC again I'd use a 1-9twist and Barnes' heavy for caliber bullets or the Nosler bullets.

I am lost...... feel free to enlighten me with a dose of pure genius based on your handle ....... if you don't shoot a .338 win you should likely change it....... unless apparently you are an avid grizz hunter..... may I suggest "22znuff"......

Also fail to see your comparison in regards to .375 and .458 .... I don't see anyone in this discussion claiming a howitzer won't kill a "songdog"....... the thread is and the discussion is about personal minimums......

Really? You don't see it. Huh. I would never have imagined.

Guess I'm speaking under you or something. I'll just watch and learn now.

Most deer are shot with snow on the ground in open areas. The opposite is true for black bears and that makes for difficult tracking.
Bears have long hair and a thick layer of fat in fall, they can navigate the thickest cover with amazing speed.
A 300lb fall bear isn't unusually large by any stretch. That would be an average 3-4 year old male.

I just prefer to leave mysterious questions and hidden innuendo to women....... deciphering codes, etc just isn't my thing.....

Being an internet warrior ranks low on my list of ambitions......... I guess it all comes with being a straigh shooter......
