Not sure if a drilling is more of a rifle or shotgun...
Anyways, I was eyeing a Sauer drilling on the Tradex site awhile back. It was 12ga SxS with a 5.6x52R under barrel and it really piqued my interest. Regardless, I dawdled too long thinking it over and missed out on buying it. I thought it would be a nice gun to use on coyotes. #4 buck up close or running and the 5.6 for long standing shots, not to mention the cool factor.

Anyone have/use a drilling over here? I have a hankering for one...
 
Though not a drilling I have a Savage 2400 combo in 12ga/308

Have shot a Sauer in 16 gauge over a 7x64r .
Used the Shotgun on a grouse and ended up clubbing said grouse with the gun as it was quicker to do so than try and fumble another shell into the chamber.
Their is a back story to that as well.
Same gun, buddy missed a 4 point at 40 yrds when he under estimated where he was aiming for...actually the snow blew into his face right at the point he was pulling the trigger.
I still want one...maybe a Blazer in 20 gauge/243??

My ultimate dream gun would be a 20ga SxS with a 22 magnum barrel in the rib. I thought such a gun did not exist until I saw one advertised by a European gun maker, sweet and expensive. The 22mag barrel was built in the rib so you couldn't even tell it was there. Had a flip up rear sight with a rear set trigger for the rifle barrel, and the gun only weighs six lbs! Talk about the ultimate upland/small game gun. To expensive for me though, maybe one day.

their heavy but damn accurate.........
 
I am finding with my research that it's hard to find one with a light rifle calibre. I want to use it in SW ont so it has to be under that damned 7mm limit.

Baikal made a .223/12 gauge if you dig deep enough, changeable choke tubes as well........
 
The combination guns are very lite compared to drillings. That said you only have one shotgun barrel,no instant second shot. I have a sauer combination in 16x 8x57r that weighs in about 5 pounds and a remo in 16x10.3x60r. Both guns are used for grouse and if I should stumble on a bear or other big game I will be ready. Combination guns and drillings never get much use over here, they should.
 
I've been casually looking for an affordable drilling for many years, anything in my price range is cracked up, bulged and welded.
They are very costly and are more of a collector or novelty, imo.

I have one just like you find. I've got a very nice Sauer drilling sidelock from 1910. Only one tiny issue---it's missing the bottom barrel!! Was removed years ago but the gunsmith that did it must have been a master smith. Actually, as a regular double barrel shotgun, it handles and swings very nicely and is a high quality gun.
 
My dream drilling would be German or Austrian in a 16ga SxS over 6.5. Seems to be just a dream...

Oh yeah...with a claw mount scope....

Perhaps you used the wrong Ammo. Bolt Actions come in 7*64, break Actions like Drillings usually 7*65R.

Ended up buying a Heym combo gun with a Nickel claw mount scope. Its a 16 over 222 Rem Magnum. Hope to use it for coyotes once it arrives and I figure out some loads. I had to buy brass and dies too for the rifle caliber. It has a single set trigger that I need to figure out too.

I have owned three drillings and several combination guns (or as the Germans call them, BBF). You really do need to spend some serious coin to get something that works well and handles well.

My current line up includes a Krieghoff Trumpf Dural 16x16/7x57R, with a .22 magnum rf insert barrel in the left shotgun tube, with a Kales 3-9 scope in claw mounts. It is light, well balanced, accurate, and deadly. I used it for a whitetail and some grouse this fall.

I also have a Merkel O/U, two barrel set. i mostly use it with the 16x16 ga barrels as a bird gun for pheasant and sharptail hunting, but sometimes use the other set of 16 ga/7x57R with Hensoldt 4x scope ( claw mounts) for deer, and I took my only wolf with it.

A Heym O/U in 16 ga over .222 Remington completes the trio. It is perfect for shooting beavers or calling coyotes in the bush. It weighs under 6 pounds w/o the QD scope, an odd 2-4 power model in claw mounts.
