Drillings / combo guns

I am finding with my research that it's hard to find one with a light rifle calibre. I want to use it in SW ont so it has to be under that damned 7mm limit.

Under 7mm - tradeex has really nice O/U and sxs combo guns under that in various cals and combos... actually... I just saw some that I like... I'm going to regret telling cgn to look there I think :p

My ultimate dream gun would be a 20ga SxS with a 22 magnum barrel in the rib. I thought such a gun did not exist until I saw one advertised by a European gun maker, sweet and expensive. The 22mag barrel was built in the rib so you couldn't even tell it was there. Had a flip up rear sight with a rear set trigger for the rifle barrel, and the gun only weighs six lbs! Talk about the ultimate upland/small game gun. To expensive for me though, maybe one day.

Now make that in 22 Hornet instead and Wow!!!

I have owned three drillings and several combination guns (or as the Germans call them, BBF). You really do need to spend some serious coin to get something that works well and handles well.

My current line up includes a Krieghoff Trumpf Dural 16x16/7x57R, with a .22 magnum rf insert barrel in the left shotgun tube, with a Kales 3-9 scope in claw mounts. It is light, well balanced, accurate, and deadly. I used it for a whitetail and some grouse this fall.

This picture pretty much nails why I want a drilling...very nice!

Not a drilling but a combo set Merkel 16ga over 16ga with the extra barrel set being 16ga over 7x57R with a 1.5x6 Hensoldt Diavarti scope (claw mounts). Storage space for extra rifle ammo under the toe of the stock. She was love at first sight.

Ended up buying a Heym combo gun with a Nickel claw mount scope. Its a 16 over 222 Rem Magnum. Hope to use it for coyotes once it arrives and I figure out some loads. I had to buy brass and dies too for the rifle caliber. It has a single set trigger that I need to figure out too.

I think I was looking at that one you bought from trade ex and was debating it myself. I have a savage 24p in 22/20 ga and it's my favorite gun. I'm wanting to get something bigger as well but thinking a savage 30-30 over 12 ga. for pushing during the deer hunt.

:rolleyes:Buddy came by last night with my share of a deer from last fall. He said he got a drilling at the last show. Couldn't remember the name but said it had something like S. Krupp on it.

It was 2x12 gauge over a 7.7x57R barrel.

He bought it despite the rifle barrel being in an obscure:rolleyes:calibre.

The combination guns are very lite compared to drillings. That said you only have one shotgun barrel,no instant second shot. I have a sauer combination in 16x 8x57r that weighs in about 5 pounds and a remo in 16x10.3x60r. Both guns are used for grouse and if I should stumble on a bear or other big game I will be ready. Combination guns and drillings never get much use over here, they should.

I saw one of those sauers on the Ellwood Epps site, they any good for the price? Might just be a birthday/xmas gift to myself.

That one didn't work out. Had a bit of an issue with the scope crosshairs moving around while changing magnification levels. Had a bigger issue going off when you took off the safety. FWIW, tradeex took it back no questions asked and refunded me right away.

Glad they took it back without any hassles. Havent bought anything from them but have heard they were great to deal with.

My wife has a rich relative in Germany who has a locker full of drillings and combination guns. Very nice pieces, but heavy and for me as I have little interest in grouse shooting, not to my taste.

remo in 16x10.3x60r
curious where you are getting the ammo for this?

As for combo guns I have always wanted one.
Site sponsor Mistic Precision had brass and dies. I reload a .411 dia 300 grain sp (405 Winchester) with very good results.

Almost bit on a Merkel 12 over 8x57r a couple of yrs ago. Still looking for a good 20 over 6.5 or 7mm x57R. Not easy to find. Good ones are not cheap.
Combo guns can probably be had for under the 5 mark in the Zoli's or Chapuis, thought hard on a 20 over 30R a few yrs ago. But, I like sxs over rifle, so, have to keep looking.
