I have been experiencing some cabin fever so I went out back with a sacrificial block of wood and did a test.

Looking at these pictures, not knowing the range or the cartridge, do you say that this is enough gun at that range for deer? I did not shoot for accuracy, I just wanted 3 shots on the board to compare.

The board is a 1 3/4" piece of frozen spruce.

What do you think?

Unless you shot that group at 25 yards, I do t care what the cartridge is...... it won't be enough...... :)

I was not shooting for a group, I wanted multiple shots into the board, as was written in the OP.

Would one of those shots kill a deer?

Range is irrelevant here, I was not aiming for anything but a board, ha ha, standing and shooting, no dot to focus on.

Why don't you just say what the caliber is and then people will tell you if it has ever had success on deer and to what range you can expect to drop one with a perfect shot!!??

Doesn't seem very powerful at all looking at the exit holes!!!!

Are you wondering if a certain cartridge or load is enough to kill deer? Or are you wondering if a 1" and 3/4" board is a suitable test ballistic penetration?

If you know how to shoot, wait for a close shot and place your shot well, a 22 long rifle will kill a deer. I like to use a larger calibre, because, I feel there is a less chance of the animal suffering, if conditions or my shooting is not perfect. I would imagine that a slingshot would kill a deer...I would not try though.

I think he killed a dead tree ...
Bout as good as it gets...
Does the op even have a PAL or taken a hunting course in the Province he resides in?
Cause all of the questions will have been answered there already.
But, what do I know?

You'd be surprised how often spruce rounds in my firewood stash manages to drag themselves away from the stove.

You tell me your opinion based on your scientific findings..... :)

Your second sentence is a decent answer, the caliber is irrelevant here, based on the exit hole of 3/4" you do not believe this will kill at deer at the given range, good enough.

As for everyone up in arms about using wood, sorry, I don't have a spare deer carcass laying around to test on.

I know that many people use 1" pine as a relative example of what is necessary to penetrate into the chest cavity through a rib and kill a deer but I better get out there and find a road kill to shoot.
