thinking about buying another CZ. 452 or 455?

Lol.. I think Grauhanen and I were typing at the same time. If I'd seen his post it would have saved me a lot of taps. I agree.
I use Center-X if I'm testing something or shooting a match, I want the best, most consistent results I can afford. The Standard Plus is for everyday range visits and short range work.
He makes a good point about matching ammunition to the rifle and even shooter capability. If my particular combination of rifle/optic/shooter performs no better with Midas+ than Center-X, then why waste the extra money unless I upgrade something else as well to get the full benefit of the better ammunition? As I get older, upgrading me seems to be the single biggest challenge!
Each step up the accuracy ladder will reveal a different weakness that wasn't apparent at the previous level. A slippery slope.
I think you've made a good solid choice with the 452 Varmint, TCG. They're a good rifle for the money, I find mine very rewarding to shoot. Being pretty never hurts either.. lol.

thank you guys for the fantastic advice. i will start by trying SK Standard Plus ($67.00/brick) and RWS Rifle Match ($89.25/brick). those prices make it a lot easier to swallow.

Good starting point. I'd also suggest just running a brick of cheap plinking ammo (perhaps Federal Automatch) through the rifle at first before beginning to seriously test the good ammo for accuracy. It has been my experience that it takes 500-1000 rounds for a new rifle to "settle down". Give it a good cleaning the get down to accuracy business! I see Silverdale in your signature line, I also shoot there. If you're interested in trying a box of the high end ammo at some point, PM me and maybe we can work something out.

I understand Team was replaced by Edge. Be careful when thinking "equivalent" when comparing products made by the big three .22LR match ammo -- Lapua, RWS, and Eley. A more fair way to compare is perhaps on price, and here the above comparison is certainly valid.

Edge is by no means a re-branded replacement for Team. Edge is a distinct new variation featuring a black oxide case. According to Eley this results in an increased projectile release force. I'll leave it to their eggheads to explain why that might be of some benefit towards accuracy. On the chronograph compared to the lot of Team I have, Edge shoots an average 40 fps greater than Team. I didn't intend to suggest "equivalent" brands of ammo could be interchanged freely to achieve the same results but instead it was in reference to price and ranking on the quality ladder of the respective brands.

For those shooting stock CZ's, it is likely unnecessary to use the most expensive ammo to achieve the best results the rifle can produce --

X-Act-ly. The mid-level ammo is more than capable of producing many fine groups and has been used extensively with success in the 1/2" challenge. The much greater cost of top-tier ammo is of marginal, if any, benefit to most. My rule of thumb is that if I do not see a certain level of performance out of the mid-grades (SK Rifle Match, RWS Target Rifle, Eley Sport/Club) then moving up that brands ladder is unlikely to result in better performance. For me to see 70-80% of groups shot at 50 yards under 1/2" would inspire me to try the next grade up in that manufacturer's ammo line.

I have a 452 American and love it. Trigger was awesome but put a yodave kit in it and made it better. CCI mini mags is all I shoot, 50 yards they go into one ragged hole, 100 yards is challenging but fun, 200 yards the hits are getting scarce but enough hits to be a blast. Love my cz.

thank you for the kind offer. maybe this summer if i have enough time to break-in the rifle.

After years of testing and lots of $$$ spent on rimfire ammo here's 3 different types you should have on hand.
Aguila SV for sighting in ,practice, open sight rimfire bought right $50/500
SK std plus, capable of good groups, some flyers, great practice round moving up in accuracy $70/500
Lapua center X ,very few flyers, awesome groups with the right lot #,reasonable prices for good match grade ammo, $125/500.

I've tried the RWS 100 and 50,midas + and have been disappointed. Rabid spent a lot on eley and came away with so so results and saved me $$$.
My favorite is center x ,I can afford to shoot lots of it and I can't count how many challenge groups I've shot with it.CZ,s and Anschutz,s like it.

Keep in mind most of those results were due to dud barrels (Lilja and Weatherby XXII). My MSR did well with Eley Sport and Team, they were decent substitutes for it's preferred SK/Lapua during the shortage.

I'll be doing an Eley test with my re-barreled XXII next range day. Should be interesting.

To the OP:
Glad for you that you've decided to take the 452 route, that's what I'd do also.

so im thinking about adding another CZ to my collection. this time a .22LR.
what are the differences between the 452 varmint and 455 varmint besides the interchangeable barrel?
is there any difference in accuracy?

a local store has the 452 varmint in stock if i chose to go that route.

I just read the last few posts on here and found the ammo insight/suggestions very interesting. I do wonder if it's leaving thechineseguy with the impression that you need to feed CZs the super-grade 22 ammo for it to shoot well. "Shoot well" is subjective of course, but for my needs...my 452 Varmint shoots incredibly well without it. Again, it was informative to read about the Eley stuff (which I've read on RFC too) and I may get some to try some day...but for plinking, casual shooting...and naturally, bowling gophers over..you sure don't need it! Heck, my 452 even shoots Winchester 333 half-decently for plinking. The only 22 I've ever owned that I can say that about! lol

thechineseguy~to my way of thinking...get the gun, put a decent scope on it, shoot a few hundred rounds through it and decide if you want some improvement with the trigger. (I used the YoDave kit) Buy a box of 50 of every kind that tweaks your interest, and start seeing what it can do. If punching paper is your thing, and super-tight groups are the only ones that satisfy, then disregard and pull out your credit card for the big $ ammo. Personally, I've yet to bother with it and even if I did, it would never be the stuff I start with. Get to know the gun with CCI SV, SK Standard, CCI Blazer, etc. My opinion only, but I'm a hack. :)

Me getting to know the 452 Varmint I keep yapping about;

i just got back from the store with the rifle. i will be putting low priced ammo through it mostly (federal automatch, winchester white box, cci mini mags or whatever i happen to have laying around) as i usually bring a guest with me when i shoot outdoor and save the middle-grade ammo for when i get to shoot alone and dont have to babysit.

Almost nothing beats "new gun" day~congrats!

Hello TCG, very nice varmint combo you got there, congrats.

I got my 22 rifles so I can shoot as cheaply as possible yet wanted to achieve maximum accuracy for the money.

I think I found the ammo that works well for my 452 Style and Varmint (both topped with identical Bushy DtoD 4x12-40AO) and my ubiquitous Savage Mk2F with Bushy Sportview 3-9x-32AO.

On a calm day and after a good night sleep for me, these three rifles could put 5 rds of Winchester Dynapoint standard velocity bulk into 1 inch groups at 100 metres at the Port Coquitlam range. Benched and sandbagged at fore end and butt. Sometimes there would be an ammo related flyer, as well as called flyers by yours truly. When the sun was right, I could see bullets fly through its trajectory arc and hit point of aim. There were days I could do 1 inch groups maybe 3 out of 5 times. Some days well, not.

That was about 5 or more yrs ago.

So I suggest that ammo among one of your choices.

Congrats on the new rifle, she is a beauty!

Beyond the Yodave kit, which most people use. I didn't really have any slop in the trigger pull but the lighter spring is great.

One thing that really helped was reading up on rimfirecentral, there is so much information on this rifle! One area of importance you may want to look into is screw torque values.

Here are some accessories you might be interested in, now that you are a precision target shooter :)

You probably shoot with both eyes open right? So if your eyes get tired and you find it difficult to focus this flip-down eye blinder is very handy:

This cartridge tray makes it much easier to pull the 22LR ammo from the trays and saves me a lot of frustration (you simply pop the ammo trays onto this thing and it raises some rows - flip it and it raises the other set of rows - super handy!):

Last but not least, single shot magazine... I was having precision issues caused by rounds fed through a magazine (feed angle, damage to the bullets). This single shot adapter made a world of difference! It has a simple ramp that allows you to feed a single round at a time.

That is unbelievable for inexpensive bulk ammo! (And with low power scopes to boot.) Most guys and rifles would have a hard time getting one inch groups at fifty yards three of five times with Dynapoint. It must have very consistent MV out of your rifles.

Good batch of Dynapoints perhaps? To be honest I am not a great shot. But those groups really surprised me. Haven't shot for 100m groups since that time.

Could be something about the PoCo range. For example, Around the same time, we did a couple of informal SKS 200 meter 10"x10" steel gong shoots. All CGNners in Vancouver region. I could hardly see the gong. The first event, an older Chinese gentleman asked if he could join with his scoped SKS. Seeing it was just a fun shoot, we all said why not? He scored 14/20 winning the pot of ammo (fee was one box surplus 762russian-winner take all). I got 8/20.

Second shoot, iron sights only, winner hit 11/20, won the ammo crate donated by LeverArms. I hit 5/20 this time.
