New Savage Axis .308

I'll toss a few more at ya's :)

Remington is pushing the model 700 ADL this year as the "step up" from the 783.

In it's synthetic version with a 3-9 scope (remington branded, so nothing special) it is now the $675 Remington.

A 700 SPS is now a $900 rifle. Stainless SPS adds about another $150 to the price tag. And if you want the 700 Mountain Stainless you will need $1400 in the piggy bank.

From Savage the model 11 will tag in at about $850 in the Trophy Hunter configuration with the Lady Hunter at a bit over $1100. The plane jane model 10 is now a $900 rifle and the mod 10 BA Stealth is close to $1500. Of course if you add about another $125 to that you can pick up a brand new, hot off the press mod 10 FCP.

The Mod 16/116 synthetic trophy hunter is now a $950'ish dollar rifle.

From Ruger the M77 Hawkeye starts in the mid 1400 buck range followed by the Scout in the mid 1500 range and on to the Guide gun at about 1600 bucks.

Weatherby's Vanguard Select seems to have finally made it's way to Canada with a pricetag in the $775 range. The (regular) Vanguard synthetic is a little over $900 - packaged with a Redfield scope for $1250 or a Leupold VX1 for about $1300 (includes hard case and scope is mounted with Talley lightweights).

From Howa, this year they were pushing the 1500 Panamax (includes a 3-9 scope). Will tag at about 800'ish. Most of the other 1500 platforms - Ranchland, Hogue etc "start" around the $1100 mark and go north from there.

And that's your 2017 line-up for the "I want something a step up from an entry level rifle" choices :)

I picked up a stainless barreled Axis .270 and another blued .243 for $349 ea. Both qualified for a $50 US rebate.(So $285 ish per).Add in a pair of Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 's at $175ea and I believe I have a pair of fun, great shootin guns for the money.

To update my previous reply:
I purchased a axis 308 HB should have it by the end if the week - have a budget 3-9x40 Bushnell Banner dusk/dawn scope that I purchased many years ago - am going to keep it bone stock (no trigger / stock) upgrades. Am going to exclusively reload and after break in period (factory ammo) my intention is to get 1,000 rounds down the pipe by the end of August. Going to see / document how this holds up.

In the next couple of months am going to purchase a 6.5cm not going with Savage / Tikka / Ruger but rather going to get the Howa 1500 I Truely believe that they are great value for the money and yes this one is going to get the spa treatment (20 MOA and great optics)

Cheers to all

I had an original axis in 223rem. I shot many thousands of rounds though it. It still shot excellent when I traded it in.

All the more reason to buy "used". Get a better quality rifle for a lower price than the "entry level" offerings.

Welcome to 2017 - we did most our buying back in December for this year.

Axis II XP (black or camo) is now about a $600 rifle.

The wood stocked version will go for about $650.

Ruger American synthetic, only $600 - want it coupled with a Vortex Crossfire II from factory? that will set you back $800

The Rem 783 synthetic with scope is still a relatively cheap $575'ish unless you want their wood stocked version also with a Vortex Crossfire II (maybe dumping them) - then you need to dig about $850 out of the wallet.

And not to be outdone, a synthetic Mossberg Patriot (also with the Crossfire II) will set you back about $625 - add another 125 bucks if you want the walnut stocked model.

That's your 2017 "line-up of budget rifles" :)

I bought the Rem 783 w/scope for $450 during an Xmas sale then immediately threw the no-name scope on the EE and got $40 for it (kept the rings and base). Going to take my time and look for sales for better glass. It's currently $500 at Cabelas.
