Best combat handgun...

After all the testing, it was the best. It wasn't just selected. Lol. Too funny.

Mark 23 is a overpriced piece of crap. I was going to buy one until I handle it. I was like, this is $2500 lol. Doesn't even come with night sights for that money.

So any Sig firearm will do.

Interesting read.

I'm not Armed Forces, Ex Armed Forces or Law Enforcement.

The best combat handgun is the one you've got in you're booger hooking mitts until you can fight your way to a rifle. (Or shotgun) Whether it's a .22 or a .500.

The Japanese Army issued swords to officers (I think it was just officers) in WW2, so they must have thought there was a use for them.

And don't forget the "Liberator" pistols that were made.

If you want to argue about being an "operator" remember that Wild Bill Hickock still carried a pair of '51 Colts even though much more modern guns were available. He just trusted them that much more. If it was all I had, then heck yeah! I'll carry an obsolete gun, but would really, really prefer to not to have to make the choice.

I'm going to go back and hide under some flame retardant now.

There were only 8 contenders (12 total, but some were multiple calibers) for the trials..... they got the best of the contenders... they didn't get the best combat pistol.

Now, run every pistol out there - and remove the stipulations - through the trial I am sure you would bet a different result.

I am in no way knocking the P320. I like it..... but... I would rather keep my 226, or a USP....

As has been said multiple times on this thread, a true combat handgun ( not a SHTF/zombie handgun) is a open carry firearm used for fighting your way back to a rifle. If you happen to have one on you that is issued, you will have, at maximum, probably 45-60 rounds before you run dry. Hypothetically, you just need a gun that can shoot that number of rounds at a time, reliably, accurately and safely.
If you actually shoot that many rounds in anger and run dry and cannot get to a heavier platform, you are probably being over-runned and the S just HTF!
My choice is Glock but the new 320 has great promise. However, I'll take a Hi Point if that's all that's available.
Although I would be very wary of any MIL that issues Hi Points as a standard handgun! LOL!

US Navy, Army and Marine SOF for operational reasons could not wait for this program to wind it's way to completion. They needed guns yesterday.
As a result they moved ahead with Glock, at various stages over the past several years. It will take time for the new Sig P320's to come on line.
In the mean time SOF will continue with the Glock for the time being and for several years. Don't get too excited about the US Navy SOF "just going to the Glock".
They couldn't wait. US Army CAG had decided a long time ago they were moving away from the Glock.
By the way the Glock is a great weapon....and so is the Sig P320.

I would tailor my sidearm to the opponent. My wife is inexplicably a walking dead fan and whenever they are battling a horde, running around with colt pythons I can't help but think a handful of South Ontario farm boys and a couple pails of .22 shells would have wrapped up the apocalypse in an afternoon.

Of course there is always an emotional vote for a 1911 in, of course,.45 ACP but a personal favorite from years and years ago is a Sig P226. Having said that, the duty gun I carry today ( Glock 22 ) is very hard to beat - easy to use; nobody doubts the 'knock down' power of .40 cal; 15 round mag; exceptional reliability etc etc. Someone earlier said though the best is what you have in your paws while working your way to a long-arm alternative :)

...an HK45 running .45 Super (and of course it'll happily run .45acp if/when you don't want to use the more powerful stuff)

...or a Glock in 9mm, or .40, or 10mm (I chose a G19, but whatever...)

Love threads like this where there is no correct or definite answer. Even the question itself is open to question
What's a combat handgun anyway?:d

Anyhow, my first choice would be a 1911. I'd pick the most reliable one in my safe. That is currently my older, proven Norkie Commander 45 that has never ever FTFF or FTE with my own full power 230 grain self-casted round head reloads. So for extra margin of reliability, I'd keep it clean and lubed, as well as have factory ball ammo in 5 magazines at the ready. Hopefully good enough to buy me time and space to get to the SKS.

Not the best choice for everyone. There's a lot to be said for Glocks or 686 and GP100 .357 revolvers which I also love and wouldn't hesitate to use if I had to.

Sig would be top of the list, but a glock G19 would do me just fine.
