Why not just put up a for trade ad in the EE and trade it for a shorty?
Be REALLY careful with barrel length measurement and how it is measured according to the Firearms Act - you may not want to get that close to 18.5" - go a couple of 10ths of an inch longer. Otherwise you run the risk of having an unregistered restricted firearm, as the M14 shorty is restricted. May want a verifier to confirm the finished barrel length, and remember that this would not include flash hider, etc.

If you shorten a barrel to less than 18.5", it doesn't become restricted. It becomes prohibited.

That only applies to handguns, not to rifles.
I have a BD44,which has a 16.5" barrel and it is restricted only.
Yeah thought about that but i wanted to cut it and have a different thread on it to put an aftermarket muzzle brake.
Semi auto centerfires...
Cut, but over 18 1/2 - non-restricted.

Factory manufactured 16 1/2 - restricted.
When shortening a M305 - measure barrel diameter where the new muzzle is going to be, if you are going to thread it for an accessory. Know what size threads can be cut.
