Hi,

So i have a M305 that i bought from my buddy and its a 22" barrel. I want to cut it to 18,5" without making any adjustment to the gas system. Will this lead to any cycling issues? Has anyone done this before?

Thx,
GT

I have done this many times. Never an issue.

The hardest part is crowning it properly as the bore is chrome lined. Not to say that it's different than a "normal" crowning job, but it is just a touch different.

I've had no problems with all the barrels I've had cut.
The gas port on a factory Shorty is slightly larger than on the 22 inch barrel that I have noticed
Just make sure the gas port lines up with the gas cylinder

Chrome lined bore is not a problem with a carbide tool. Anyone that's going to cut and rethread should have at least one carbide cutter around somewhere :)

Be REALLY careful with barrel length measurement and how it is measured according to the Firearms Act - you may not want to get that close to 18.5" - go a couple of 10ths of an inch longer. Otherwise you run the risk of having an unregistered restricted firearm, as the M14 shorty is restricted. May want a verifier to confirm the finished barrel length, and remember that this would not include flash hider, etc.

Good call! I'll probably get it cut slightly longer then!

I use a cleaning rod to measure from the bolt face to the muzzle. Then cut the bbl at 18.6", which gives you 472mm. 2mm over the legal minimum.

Measure twice, cut once!

If you shorten a barrel to less than 18.5", it doesn't become restricted. It becomes prohibited.

That only applies to handguns, not to rifles.
I have a BD44,which has a 16.5" barrel and it is restricted only.

Semi auto centerfires...
Cut, but over 18 1/2 - non-restricted.
Cut, but 18 to 18 1/2 - restricted.
Cut, less than 18 - prohibited.
Factory manufactured 16 1/2 - restricted.

When shortening a M305 - measure barrel diameter where the new muzzle is going to be, if you are going to thread it for an accessory. Know what size threads can be cut.

I had one done as well and 1/2 x28 is the size and thread pitch ...the barrel is thinner profile at the 18.5 inch mark so a reg pitch of 5/8x24 wont work .

Ahh, OK. Its less than 18" not 18.5. Thanks.
