Canik TP9SA vs S&W M&P 9

I would stick to the M&P of the two:

1. Better support: availability of spare parts, aftermarket sights, holsters, magazine price/availability, etc.
2. The Canik is an unknown quantity in terms of reliability/durability. Has anyone run a lot (as in multiple tens of thousands) of rounds through one? Do any agencies outside of Turkey use them?
3. A decocker on a single action only pistol is just plain wrong in principle.

In general, it is best to stick to fairly mainstream pistols if you want to shoot them in any quantity. Points 1 and 2 generally apply to most cases of Brand X vs. Glock/M&P/SIG/etc.

They also make excellent firearms. CNC equipment and a long history of making firearms would suggest they know what they are doing. As for the American products. They can be as good and even top of line but quality control is not a feature of some American made firearms eg. Ruger for starters. Where you are born has little to do with the ability to produce quality products.

I'm not too leery about the reliability of the Canik, they are ISO 9000 and NATO certified and I have read on a few torture tests providing exception results - including a 50,000 round test. I agree with you on the decocker, but that really won't matter considering we can't carry anyways. :(

Congrats, nice pistol and I'm sure you will enjoy it, my buddy loves his, and I probably would have bought one if the FNS wasn't so
" lefty" friendly. I enjoy shooting my buddy's very much and it's a great looking gun imho
 
If IPSC Production division competition is in your future, pick the M&P as the Canik TPSA models are "SA - Single Action" and not eligible for IPSC production. (Only DA/SA, DA or Strikers are OK there - SA is prohibited.)

Single action is also why they have a nice trigger...

Nfras your pistol should work well in IDPA ESP Division and can play in ASI as well if you develop an interest in action shooting. The gun would not be top of mind for most but a lot of us just play for fun anyway and winning can come in many forms.

They don't like Serpa style holsters either, which the Canik ships with.

Come again? Am I missing something?? The M&P is a striker fired SA.....so is the Canick TP9SA.....

You are right....the TP9SA is "Not Approved" at this time....not that this makes sense to me...and probably one of the reasons I went IDPA....LOL

The M&P is considered a DAO gun. Sean runs IPSC in Canada, do you really think he would post something that was not accurate? The striker on the M&P is not fully set until the trigger is pulled hence the decision made by IPSC and IDPA to consider the gun to be a double action pistol. You may have had different idea but a little research often helps. So yes, you missed something. IDPA treats the two guns the same way as IPSC for the same reason.

Canik TP9 gets my vote.

It's a great little gun. Awesome Price for the quality. Good feel, decent trigger, minimal recoil.

Handle one before you buy, if you can, but I'm sure you'll love it.
 
Got both, love both. The Canik does have the better trigger. Everything else is very subjective, to each their own. What I like you might not.

Um, part of Turkey is actually part of Europe physically and also a major member of the European community politically (EU, CoE, OECD, OSCE, EEC, EUCU, etc.)
So, yeah... Europe.


As for the OP, I haven't got to try a Canik, yet, but I'd like to as I've heard good things. I shot the both the M&P-9 and M&P-45 and liked them both, there was no major issues. An immediate family member carries the M&P-40 at work and likes it as well. But like others have said, best to try and them both before buying, if you can.
 
I'm an M&P fan...never tried or even handled a Canik, tho' I'd like to give it a try.

I asked the counterfolk at TSE about the M&P 2.0. They say we might see them by Fall this year, unless we get really lucky. I'm up for one in .45ACP, no manual safety...
