IDF M14 parts kits picture thread!

My thoughts....

The IDF Stocks with the "large" cheek-rest, while defiantly necessary with the Nimrod Scope on the ULTA high scope mount utilized, are pretty much useless with anything readily available on the market for M14 pattern rifles.

I also prefer my M-14's with irons, although a scope is handy from time to time, most of the shooting I do is with irons. I generally scope only when doing ladder tests and accuracy testing, as such I use a Bradley cheek-rest and a basset mount for the purpose.

I believe that the USGI Fibergalss stock is pretty much the best "all-round" M14 pattern rifle stock out there. They are getting pretty hard to find in decent shape.

So it looks like I'm going to have to do some "repairs" to the stocks I have.....

1st problem, after removing the cheek-riser and rubber butt pad, the butt pad is pretty much destroyed, so re-using the rubber is out.
2nd problem, the OEM GI butt plate has been buggered when adding the rubber butt pad
3rd problem, The stock has had a bit of material (about 5/8") removed where the butt plate hinge is supposed to go. It looks pretty ugly if a OEM butt plate is sourced and installed.

My Solution;

Garand Butt plate mod.

The "big hole" is filled with fiberglass body repair Bondo, it pretty easy to use the wide masking tape as a shaping dam. Once the fiberglass is hardened I shape it with a file. I then bed it with Devcon to ensure good solid fitment and to fill any gaps where support is needed.

Here are a couple of pics where I have filled the selector cut-outs with the same fiberglass filler and then used Devcon as a body filler to fill in any blemishes. It a bit more pricey than body filler, but it woks very well for the task.

Once a rifle is built, I will skim bed the action to the stock, then prep, sand and re-finish.

Still haven't decided if I am going to remove the extra side mounted front swivel or the sling swivel used for a bi-pod.

I also have to decide if I am going to fill the threaded holes left over after the cheek riser was removed, or maybe build a roll-over cheek piece suitable fore use with a scope....

John, when M14 aficionados in the U.S. are refinishing IDF sniper stocks to rebuild IDF M14 sniper variants with Nimrod and Hensoldt scopes, are you sure you really want to be destroying these IDF stocks? I am quite sure the value of an IDF M14 sniper stock is greater than a M14 fiberglass stock with an M1 Garand butt plate on it. Maybe its worth something in Canada, but in the US I doubt anyone would touch your mod, or may offer you $10. People who want M14's want M14's or known variants. Anyway, I just hate to see genuine military configurations ruined, especially when ordinary M14 fibre glass are still available.

I'm a fanboy of the USGI Glass stock. They work and they work well (enough for what we are doing).... Great for shooting SR (Service Rifle) matches!!

Cheers and thanks for the pictures, John of that M1 Garand butt plate mod. Done that with my USGI M14 glass stock once. I like the Garand butt plate.

I agree with you, but..... the chances of exporting a stock to the US are exactly Zero.... and I don't think there is much of a market for an absurdly high cheek riser'd GI fiberglass stock.

Yes I know I bubba'd a IDF stock, the IDF bubba'd it first!

I, like a drunken monkey, tried to clean this stock up. I tried to facilitate this by taking the removeable bits off. Only to discover that the brittle rubber butt pad disintegrates when looked at sideways with a screw driver in your hand....

Seemed like the best use of the stock.

Thanks for your patience John.
You are correct

I started one and almost finished. The donor receiver has a nice clean dark look like the chopped receiver. It's a unmarked receiver with only a serial number. Since I have three kits I was able to try oprods to find best fit. Lo and behold one fit like a glove and cycles smooth. The build is on! Only thing left Is to lap the bolt.it almost closed on 1.6300 It will close on NATO ammo but not commercial.

Rifle on the right was a test fit for cheek weld. Troy battle rail with high rings perfect fit
It's a lot of fun but it's a fair amount of work. 2 more to go

Jealous of you guys getting yours together already. Mine's in pieces on the kitchen table and tbh, probably wont move from there for a long long while :( Funds are all dried up for the foreseeable future.

Ok I hope I have all the information correct on this form. Please fill it out and let me know what I should change or add to it. I will add my info when my kits show up.

You can fill the form out multiple times if you have more kits

Just getting around to entering data for ya, I notice that a couple of my rear sight codes are not present on your list.... BME & SWK.

John

Thanks for the heads up. Just added them in. Hope it works.

Hey this is a great idea and thanks for making the list, I will add info in hopefully today ( fingers crossed ) A couple things I will mention in hopes they might be added is SAK/General Dynamics only made replacement barrels, op rods, gas tubes, and pistons and did not make any other M14 part. For the rear sight can you make a few extra categories for "Rear Sight Base" "Elevation Drum" and "Windage Knob". For the gas tube H&R were the only ones to mark it, it will be a "T" inside a circle. As well H&R were the only ones to mark the barrel band. Can you also add a section in trigger group area for the Safety?

And for reference on the rear sight sub contractors.
SWK - Stewart Iron Works
WCE - Wico Electric
DRC - Druge Brothers
BME - Bruce Machine & Engineering

And here is a pic of the H&R marked gas tube and barrel band as well as few other parts.

I have looked all over all of my rear sight pieces and there isn't a single mark on any of them with the exception of the elevation and windage knobs. I can't seem to find a safety mark either, but it may be hidden on the side covered by the housing.

Just arrived this morning.
