A buddy is moving from Vancouver to Wakefield Quebec.

I was just wondering what the hunting is like there.

Is there crown land nearby where you can go deer hunting or is it all private?

How far north do you have to go to get moose hunting? Is it a lottery type system to get a moose permit like in BC?

What are the waterfowling opportunities?

Coming from BC where there are vast tracts of Crown land to hunt on and great waterfowling in the Lower Mainland I suspect that I'd find it quite different in Quebec. But I'll bet the whitetail deer opportunities are good.

All private. It borders on the Gatineau provinical park where there's absolutely no hunting. Poaching is rampant - every year there are road blocks to catch poachers.

There are ZECs an hour north... but from what I've been told it's pretty busy over there. For a lot of people i's an excuse to go drink beer so hunting season is a bit of a ... show.

There is moose hunting if you can find where. It is a lottery.

Waterfowl is similar - you need to be able to find land where you can hunt. Making friends with someone to let him hunt on their land is his best chance for a successful hunt.

Tell him to check out the Papineau Labelle reserve, its good for moose, deer, small game and migratory bird. Log cabins operating on generators with gas stove to rent or camp sites. Its a great place and I have always had success (small game only for me, love grouse and hare!).

Moose hunting is by draw in parks only, otherwise its 2 tags for 1 moose ( may vary depending on zone) so you get a buddy and go. Get a map of crown land https://www.gpsquebec.ca/index.php/fr/ , http://www.macarte.ca/ecoforestiere.php and start exploring. Much better chance of having areas to yourself during bow only seasons for moose.
Deer and bear can be hunted the same on crown land.
Waterfowl hunting on the Ottawa river later in the season, especially after deer rifle season, you will have the water to yourself.

Nothing like BC though...

Sure is...but of you drive a few hrs north you won't see much of anyone...

My friend is moving, not me. I don't think wifey would go for it even though I could sell my house here and buy one there with a million dollars in play money left over.

The Gatineaus are not the Coastal Mountains of BC. There are villages, houses, cottages, ski hills and roads all over the place. The forestry operations took all the good wood, and what is left is in a generation's long regrowth cycle. Consequently, there aren't a lot of jobs except for commuting to work and in small service industries.

I know a fellow who got out of the military and tried to make a go in the septic tank business, figuring everyone dumps once a day and relying on Quebec's very thorough environmental laws. He ran into a bunch of modern-day rednecks and hillbillys who wouldn't pay their bills and didn't like being told about it. So, if your friend is an Anglo from away, he's going to have a really rough ride trying to make a living.

Hunting is a different culture in Quebec than elsewhere. He should check the game regulations to understand which species are open and where. There are also province-specific firearms laws he needs to live within. Even on the range, I've never met a more paranoid bunch of folks, always trying to behave more safely than necessary. It was almost childish to watch, but a sad comment on how badly the provincial authorities have browbeaten hunters and shooter! (I can say this stuff because I was born in Quebec!)

even coming from Europe i found it really strange but then you summed up so well ...

Wakefield itself is a pretty area... took my wife to a spa there for our anniversary a few years ago... the country looks like it should hold deer and we saw a couple while driving, but I have never hunted in QC.

I went to a small show at the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield to see Garnet Rogers (Stan's brother and accompanist ). I thought the area was very pretty, and I was shocked that a little place like that had "name" talent come through all the time.

The Black Sheep Inn is legendary....lots of incredible acts have been through there.
