Hey all I know some have converted norincos to the 460 Rowland and I've been curious about it. Is the experience worth the price?
Who did the work and how do they shoot?

you cant get them in Canada anymore.
well, you can but you'd have to pay someone to import them for you and that runs around $200 on top of the price to get the kit which makes it pretty pricey.

i got mine before the embargo on them and i installed it myself - there is really nothing too it, all your doing is swapping out the barrel which has a comp installed on the end and the spring and a 2 piece guide rod. it does take a bit of strength to put that big spring in but its not too bad.

i actually just had mine out i was comparing it to my brand new G40 to see if there was a size and weight difference.

You say embargo? What stopped them from being brought in?

Nice pair BTW

By Embargo i assume the ITAR stuff?

I've been talking to 460rowland for the last 3 weeks about getting a kit into Canada for me

I have an importer lined up willing to bring a kit in for me, at a reasonable price! It aint 200 unless you use IRG (but then you can fill your boots on the same order - as they told me!)

I havent sent my order yet, because I dont have a donor Norc yet, so I'd want to get the compensator to match whichever 1911 I end up with.

Rest assured you CAN get them....460rowland.com actually seemed very excited that a Canadian wants to get their product up here! They haven't done it in a few years so they say.

I can give you more info as to who i'm using as an importer through pm

I'm in the same boat, 45 doesn't interest me..but this does.

are you the other canadian that has been calling them in the last few weeks?

if so hello! I'm the other canadian!

depending on what you're after, we may be able to get them up here on one import charge (at least that's how i understand it, the fee is based per line item, so if there are 2 of the same, it's one charge)

I inquired a long time ago ,its interesting as its a big bore semi on a standard frame . But right now any purchases are on hold till I decide my next career move. LOL

It has a lot of power. Not 44 mag, but getting up there.

100% reliable.

Comp takes out some of the recoil.

It is quite accurate.

You have to handload for it.

You can shoot regular 45 ACP out of it, but it won't cycle the slide.

When you buy the kit, buy at least 2 bags of brass to go with it.

Buy it and have it mailed to a friend in USA.

I had a long talk with them about how strong you had to be to install the recoil spring. I suggested a small hole in the rod guide so a cross pin could be inserted to hold the spring compressed while being installed. They promised to do something like that.

That may have been me

I'm still not decided yet

How does it compares to a compensated kit?

460 rowland believes this to be a necessary part!

Would love to buy something from within the country, but the lack of compensator has stopped me from buying!

Your non compensated kit is very similarly priced to an imported 460rowland.com kit (landed)

All of our customers are quite happy with their kits thus far

while i commend Wanstalls for filling a niche that needed filling that conversion package scares the hell out of me.
no comp?

anyone who researches the 460Rowland knows that the comp is one of the main part needed for this conversion.

... a properly designed conversion requires an effective compensator to momentarily delay slide action and allow very high pressures and volumes of gas to dissipate to manageable levels before slide action may begin. Without this compensation, slide or frame failure will likely result over time and reliability will suffer in the short term.

Autoloaders converted to fire the .460 Rowland Cartridge require a properly designed compensator or ported barrel.

A caution regarding using unauthorized .460 Rowland® barrels and parts: These are made by companies we regard as bootleggers violating our federal trademark. They lack the depth of knowledge and experience with .460 Rowland® that we have acquired over years of specializing in it with its creator, Johnny Rowland. That is a business concern to us, but our concern for your safety far outweighs even that. We have ourselves experienced dangerous mishaps shooting .460 Rowland® through unauthorized barrels and poorly-designed Compensators and cannot recommend them for the round.

with the pressures that this round uses i personally would not play around with anything other than the real deal.
even just for the price alone its silly.

Wanstalls bootleg copy $460 with no compensator.
460 Rowland $323US plus $50 to import from Prophet River plus shipping (and exchange) so ballpark $480 (thats with 30% exchange)
do it yourself
Dlask 2 piece guide rod $48
Heavy Spring (25-28lb) $7.95 from Wolff directly
barrel - youd have to get a match 1911 barrel (ya need extra thick for the pressures, then have it reamed out deeper for the 460 and you should probably get a longer one and have it threaded for a comp 200-300
Brownells Clark Custom Conversion $243.73US+$15US shipping = $336.35 Can (30% conversion)

just me but when the guy that designed it says it needs to be comp'd and the company that makes it says it has to be comp'd then im gonna get a comp'd one.
im silly like that.

that's pretty well the pricing I came up with as well re: importing vs wanstalls vs diy

I still think 460rowland.com is the kit for me, anyone else who wants to get in on the import is welcome to, before i submit my order

I shoot 45-08 and have no such anxieties. Of course if the manufacturers of the 460 Rowland "kit" tell you that you need their product it's best to heed and pay up right?

Lol yea, seems more like Rowland is more bum hurt than anything. After swapping out a recoiled spring, I don't see a comp doing much in the way of slowing down a slide.

I also just looked on their site and am curious is the comp is so bloody important why they say you can run a suppressor on the gun? Also would like to know what you would do as you generally need a recoil enhancer when running a can on a 1911.
