2016 PRS - What The Pros Use

Thanks for the link... very interesting as usual but the trends over the last few years seem to be baked in.

Was really surprised to see the resurgence of the 6XC... Yeah....

Surprised to see lower interest in the 6mm CM

Be interesting to see how the 6.5 family changes with Lapua brass hitting shelves this spring.

Love this stuff. Always neat to see what is happening. I know a lot of times it can depend far more on the shooter that particular day than the components and rigs in question, but it is still a really cool guide to see what companies are producing reliable results.

Still a shame that PRS is limited to 30 cal with no specific or incorporated divisions for the bigger bore stuff (338 to 50) where ranges allow. Would really add to their appeal to me.

Why would anyone be interested in that? Those calibers are horrible options for PRS type shooting. Shooting big bores off of unsupported positions at targets ~400-600 yards away is like playing hockey as a forward with a goalie stick.

Nightforce ELR PRS match in Mills, Wyoming allows up tp 338.

You can only get PRS points if you're shooting 30 cal. or under, but you can shoot the match with a 338.

From Scott:

The match will consist of 15-16 stages and 140 rounds. 70% of the targets will be 700-1500 yards, 15% will be 500-700 and the last 15% will be 1500-2000 with 1.5-2 MOA targets. The match is a PRS points series event. Every target from 1000 and out will have an IRIS light system. Figure on 3 minute stage times and 9 ish rounds per stage. This will not be a barricade run and gun match. PRS competitors shooting for points will need to run 30 cal at less than 3200 fps. If you are in it for Trophies and Prize table you can run 338 at less than 3200.

Mainly because it is a practical shooting sport and is great to gain practical experience with your firearms. Why relegate big bores to target shooting only? They may not be able to compete the same way as the 6mm and 6.5's, but I think something like a separate division for large bore rifle would be very interesting.

I'm thinking probably cause the steel wouldn't last real long with that kinda kinetic energy (.338s and .50s)?

Scopes are up (been for a while).

FYI most of the GA Precision team shooters were ROing or helping run the Finale (even though they qualified). That accounts for much/most of the drop in Bushnell. Expect to see the number of GAP rifles to be lower as well when he posts the rfle builder stats.

Vortex really seems to be cleaning up with the razor Gen 2. I was curious to see if anyone would be running the new AMG, but it does not appear so (or not in the top 50 anyways)

Vortex only makes junk!

(only joking. Knowing this will cause a fury of #### throwing... I own a few Razors..)

Depends on the steel honestly.

1/2" Mild steel dents with almost every rifle caliber. Here you can see obvious .50BMG, .338LM, .308, 6.5x55, and .223 hits on a mild steel gong.

Here is a 1/2" AR500 plate, which is very common target steel. this one plate alone has taken over 500 rounds of .50BMG 660gr ball, 1200 .338LM 300gr SMK, and thousands of .223 and .308. Not a scratch deeper than 1/64", mostly just worn off paint. 50BMG and .338LM past 100m leave the steel still smooth to the touch.

In fact the only thing to have even ever deformed or damaged this 1/2" AR500 is .338LM tungsten core AP, which leaves a clean .22 cal hole straight through at 300m, and .50BMG AP, which the penetrator gets stuck as often as not halfway through the steel.

Cool. I would like to play with some of that!

Makes sense. The Bushnell Tactical Elite scopes still offer great bang for buck.
