Handgun Storage

Would this meet the regs for secure storage?

The barrel is removed and stored in a locked cabinet apart from the lower and slide which is stored in another locked cabinet without a trigger lock. Much like the military stores their pistols.

Just curious.

Thanks,

HA

No. the regs may appear grey and unclear to some people about the trigger lock/ no trigger lock, in safe etc, hence why we have so many storage threads, but one thing that is clear is no where do they mention removing the barrel as one of the acceptable ways of rendering it inoperable.

Attach a secure locking device so the firearms cannot be fired and lock them in a cabinet, container or room that is difficult to break into; or

Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely.

For automatic firearms, also remove the bolts or bolt carriers (if removable) and lock them in a separate room that is difficult to break into.

I sort of do a hybrid of these ideas. I bought a couple of bulk packs of the el cheapo plastic trigger locks and keep them on the pistols (and long guns) that don't get used very often. All of them are stored in the vault. The ones that go out shooting get the higher quality locks for transport when I go.

Storage? You mean you guys don't just drive around with them in your cars like I hear about on the news?

I'm lazy I guess but I went above and beyond. Mine are trigger locked in a locked travel case which is locked in a metal safe which is stored in a room designed to secure firearms. When I want to go to the range I just unlock and unbolt my gun room door and walk in open the safe and grab the guns I wish to take to the range. All required things are locked in their travel cases. Lots of locks but it's a simple system

You store your guns in travel cases? Foam ones?

If your worried about it then purchase one of those floor safes and bolt it to the floor and put a trigger lock on the pistol and be done with it . they are cheap. the police might not agree with the cabinets. they can be pried open in seconds. one of those fire proof little safes would take alot longer to get into.

and put a trigger lock on it . if you do as I said and someone comes to check on your storage you won't have any explaining to do . PERIOD.

Legally I believe if its marketed and sold as a "safe" then its considered a safe but common sense should dictate that if its made of tin with padlock tabs or filing cabinet type tumbler lock and cost you less than the cheapest gun in your collection then its a cabinet regardless of what the manufacturer stamps on the box. If its double walled, waterproof, fireproof, has several large pins that secure the door when locked and it weighs more than you do then its a safe / vault.

I noted that as well. Brybenn, this can be a big mistake, as foam often holds moisture. Leave your pistol in such a case long enough, and you may open it one day to find a bright orange handgun.
