Besides the military ranges in Ontario, does anyone know of someplace to shoot out to 5,6,7 hundred meters and beyond?

-A club?
-Private property? Etc.

Thanks

Provincial Rifle Associations do get time on DND ranges. This time is booked by the PRA and dates are published for several different types of practices and matches.

Most of people interested in LR shooting, shoot non-restricted rifles on crown lands. In Ontario, that means a long drive away from cities. Find some slope or hill to act as a backstop. Few lucky ones own properties that are large enough and have built backstops.
I found LR associations very repulsive and intrusive and will never join any. And not to forget that their fee is way too high.

Care to explain/ expand on that comment?

Repulsive: Maybe it's you?
Intrusive: This is because of government regulations...and safety.
Try golfing: The fees to join a specialized club and play can be very expensive.

Wow, I think we got ourselves a troll :ang3

Best way to learn LR shooting is to join the ORA or any other PRA, I'm sure glad I did. Sure there is the odd duck but that's part of life and is true for any organization, just deal with it.

I have noted the complete opposite. LR shooters are some of the nicest people you can meet. Fees are also incredibly low. I'm afraid you are insane. Sorry about your luck. But I would still welcome you with open arms to a clinic or match.

I too disagree with awion. But I am not thrilled about the amount of precision matches. I haven't even attended for 2 full seasons now. Because we didn't have any. Well actually there was 1 I think in 2 years.

Sorry I should have been clear. I mean at Borden. Connaught is just too far for me.

There are a lot of people in such community who guard their inner circle. Just join and see for yourself. Many guys joined and then never renewed because of such attitude. Its not the cost of equipment and travel, its that some people think they own everything associated with LR shooting. Again, join and you will see.....

No thanks: I have my own range.
You are insane for calling me insane. The whole process of becoming a member is BS. Sorry if you disagree but its just typical "We-me-you" group that is repulsive and too toxic for any one sane to waste time on. Its not about safety requirements. Still don't know what I'm talking about, just wait till they start talking about treasury stuff...lol But hey maybe you are part of the circle. In that case I rocked your inflatable boat.

Happy New Year!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My experience with the ORA and long range shooters in general has been overwhelmingly positive.

To the OP, it really boils down to what you want to do. If you want to go up into the bush and plink away, that's great. If you want to shoot competition among the best shooters (like Terry) in the Province and the Country, you can check out the ORA or whatever RA is local to you. There are several long range disciplines available through them.

My suggestion is to come out to an ORA intro day or check with the Match Director and just come out and try a match. You don't have to join and can shoot as a guest. That way you can see what's really happening for yourself. You can look at what gear everybody is running and best of all, make some new friends and get real advice from the guys that are winning.

There are other matches and clinics held around Ontario. I highly recommend TacticalTeacher on this forum. He hosted a series of mini clinics and matches out at Petawawa that are a lot of fun https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1378649-Garrison-Petawawa-PR-Match-4-01-02-Oct-2016-Debrief-Here!.

And if you get into the practical there's this https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1415361-Meaford-Long-Range-Steel-Challenge-(2-day-PRS-points-race-match)?highlight=mlrsc

This will be my 25th year of membership in the ORA/DCRA. I run the ORA club at my local DND range. Like any organization there are little clicks. There are those in the little clicks, those that are not in these click and those that just don't give a $hit about these clicks. I fall into the later group and treat everyone the same, no matter who you are. I don't care if you are a cadet shooter or a doctor.

I encourage new shooters, will loan out my personal equipment including rifles and match ammo etc. I have coached new shooters on the firing line to ensure that they get the most out of their first experience shooting with a civilian organization on a DND range. If I am at another DND range for a practice or match and see someone that is obviously new (yes we can pick you out) I will try to help them and try to make them feel at ease.

I have seen a few shooters get scared off. I had one guy contact me that lived 3 hours away from the range that wanted to come out and shoot. He lived closer to another range but didn't have a very good experience there. He came down for a practice day and could not believe how great he was treated, 100% turn around from what he experienced at another range. Maybe it is the smaller group of shooter at out club that makes the difference, maybe because we don't have any of little clicks.

Hey guys just working on a new 1000 yard range what would be a fair annual membership fee it would also have a restricted section

Good for you. We need more details though, i.e. CFO application/approval, location, intermediate shooting positions, target frames/gongs, annual proposed membership fee, etc. Please keep us up to date.
