*Affordable* Semi-Auto 223 for Yotes!!

I have a par in .223 to pick up at the post office tomorrow. I started coyote hunting in a group this year, and find most shots are at running coyotes. I have always shot right handed bolt guns left handed, but I'm not fast enough for follow up shots at runners so I'm going to try the par. All reviews I've read have it shooting 1 moa with factory loads and I'll be hand loading, so I'll be happy if I get 1 moa out to 300 yds.

Yup, there is good reason why the AR15 dominates coyote hunting in the USA- more than accurate enough and quick follow up shots without losing sight picture are chief among them. Unless you are shooting well past 300, with lots of open ground, bolt actions will lag behind, even if you work the bolt properly- unlike some guys that drop the butt from the shoulder to reload. :)

PAR might me just the ticket for you. In Canada, it might even be the best option without spending $3000 for a very accurate semi.

See, that PAR looks intriguing....I just don't know about the whole taking it off the sticks to pump and then reacquire my target thing...watching some review videos, it looks more cumbersome than a bolt action would be (for me anyway, as I'm not a lefty haha)

Yeah it might be more awkward off of sticks, I bought it specifically to help my odds when shooting running coyotes offhand. I use a bolt when shooting off sticks and try to make the first one count.

Well, thanks for all of your help and advice guys!! I ended up going with a Benelli MR1. Should be here sometime next week.

The fact that I got a smoking deal on an excellent shape used one and it can use LAR-15 mags really helped haha. I ordered up a few MFT LAR-15 mags, so we'll see how those operate.

Might have to look into getting some Beowulf mags as well. I know I won't be buying any actual Benelli mags at $120 a pop!!

Get a bolt action and actually hit one...

Even though I have a Mini-14 Stainless Synthetic Ranch Rifle topped off with a Bushnell AR 223 scope that I think is a really fun gun to shoot and makes a nice short and not too heavy truck rifle I have to agree with Hoyt. The 2moa may work on yotes out to 100 yards but at 200 or 300 it just becomes spray and pray! But that's fun too, sometimes educating them is alot of fun and of course you avoid that stinky smell of skinning them!! ;)

Godamitt, I spit out my beer!

Not sure if you're spitting your beer out because I'll be looking for Beowulf mags, which I've heard are like hens teeth, or the fact that the Benelli mags are $120 lol. But for either one, STOP WASTING BEER!! (Unless its Dude beer...that stuff tastes like metal)

Haha, don't get me wrong. I'm not going away from my trusty bolt rifles. I have several and will definitely still use them. I'm just looking to change things up a bit and have some fun like you said :)

we definitely need to vote someone in so that ARs can become NR.
now, the apcs and tavs are hitting the 3k, 4k range but there is really no other decent semi available in Canada. this is insane.

Are those 5 shot Benelli mags really $120???????????????????

I keep mine in my rifle when it's in the gun cabinet just because I don't like to store my detachable magazine rifles without a mag in the well. One trip to the range without a mag for my rifle is enough.........

That's about the only use I have for the Benelli 5 shot mag as I have 25 10 shot LARs.

For those legal, low light, dawn/dusk hunting shots, just take off the IR flashlight.....

Nice rig!!! Mine is the fixed stock version. Thinking of picking up one of those tri-rails as well, considering it's about the only accessory available for the MR1 lol.

And yes, I researched the Benelli mags, and they really are selling for $120 CDN!! Crazy! I'm going to "invest" in quite a few of the LAR15 mags, they're relatively cheap and I've heard they work with with the MR1.

Aren't the Beo mags in questionable legal standing right now? Or have I missed something?

geologist, what sorta accuracy do you get from that setup??

I actually don't know, I had thought their status was kind of "in limbo" atm, but I'm not the guy to ask. I'll probably just stick to the LAR15 mags to be safe.

My understanding of the situation is RCMP interpretation of them is they are modified 5.56/223 mags, therefore they must be pinned to 5 rds 5.56/223. There was a guy who was charged with Beowolf mags as possession of a prohib device, but last I heard he hadn't gone to court over it yet or anything (theres a huge thread around here somewhere on that...) so no legal precedent has been set yet.
