so, what's so great about the 308 Win cartridge?

I was gifted my .308, and as a new hunter, it's my only hunting rifle, and hence .308 is my favourite.

(to be serious, I have been reading lots about other rifles, but I think I better at least harvest an animal or two with my gifted 308 before actually changing anything)

This thread is nice, because it confirms that I have no need to change if I don't wish to.

Yup; that's now. I was pointing out that the .308 got a lot of bad word of mouth 25 years ago because of underloaded commercial ammo of that era, and some of the negativity from that era still turns up from time to time. Back then US -loaded 150 gr. offerings were running around 2,500 fps; not what you buy an 'o8 for. I still run into guys who insist the round has no more power than a 30-30. They're dead wrong, but the myth persists, doing a very good all-round caliber a great injustice.

Bahh the 270 is only good at showing how well marketing can work to sell something that's mediocre.
The 280 does what the 270 pretends to do

What's that? Rip off the 7x64, underload it, chamber it in a craptastic autoloader and rename it a few times in an attempt to polish a turd.

As if! .......... Guess again!

And FWIW, I own a 280.

Oh man making fun of the 270 never gets old. Really sets people off lol

There are two kinds of people in this world, those who like the 270 win and those who just don't know better yet.

Let's be honest though, hand me nearly any decent rifle and send me on a hunting trip, I am not going to care what it is chambered in.

When was this 2500 fps, 150 grain, ammunition produced? They must have slipped that past me.

To answer the original question... with another question, what's wrong with the .308? I have considered all the fancy new 308 case variants but I always come back to what's wrong with the good ol 308. So many options for weight and platforms, very easy to find. About the only problem I have come across is it's awful hard on coyotes, which really doesn't bother me, I hate those beady eyed little fiends!

It's also an intended byproduct of gun rag writers on the payroll in recent years trying to sell all the hunters on 300 WM.

It's always amazing to watch the ignorant jump on the bandwagon.

.308 is the best all around do most everything round, has been for a long time, and will continue to be for a long time for those who do not fall for the BS.

I started out with the .308 back in the early 70's, went to the .243win the 7mm08 then the 280 rem and now back to the .308 win. I haven't found anything out there that would keep me away from this venerable cartridge. Cheap to load, very accurate, loads of bullet options. There's nothing else out there for me.

How about we get real here... drop the irrational "love & hate"... the .308 Win is simply a cartridge of moderate capacity for a .30 cal bore... any of this "it's better than..." or "it's worse than..." talk is just splitting hairs. It is a nice cartridge for much of Canada's medium game... no better or worse than many others... whether you prefer the .308 case or the .30/06 case or the 8X57 case is really just personal preference... the differences only show up on paper graphs or calipers... not in the field. Personally I like all of these cases and many different persuasions of each.

There are better cartridges for specific jobs, for instance long range shots in open country, or brush busting on heavy or aggressive game in tight cover, but the .308 is a good choice as an all-round medium game round at sensible ranges. Personally I prefer the ballistic co-efficient advantage of the 7 mm., particularly the venerable 7X57 but the .308 would be a better choice for someone who does not handload and wants the convenience of readily available ammo with a good choice of bullet weights.
Westerners would probably be better served by any of the flatter shooting rounds, and folks looking to clobber moose 300 yards across a clear cut or pond would want a little more grunt per bang but a hunter with a .308 is well armed in most circumstances.

The 308 will do what is required of it as a competition round or a hunting round.
Lots of choice4s in both firearms and ammo.
Interestingly I can't recall the last time i killed an animal with one ( not because I don't like it but because i simply have other rifles) but I have competed and won more than a few matches with it.
