Depends where you live and what you do. I could get by with a .308 as an all rounder reasonably. But it's a lot like having a mid size crescent wrench and a multidriver as a tool kit. You'll get by just fine 90% of the time but you may get really frustrated the odd job. But the simple and limited tool kit's cheaper than a cabinet full of snap on and if that means you get out more, well respect. If you can afford the snap on tools and still work them regularly there's really no downside to that either, even if it's sneered at. They do offer advantages. I can't sneer either way see both argument's merits.
