Guesstimates on Glock modifications

So for the Glock shooters big question.

If price between the models isn't an issue whats the better buy between Glock 17 Gen 3, Gen 4 or Gen 4 compensated (below)

If you're going to do a full build, you might as well go with a Gen 3 as it's the cheapest. Only go to the Gen 4 if you want the interchangable backstraps. The comp models are fun, I just ordered one to replace my stock G17. They throw fire, and look good in pics but really isn't necessary in 9mm and flash can be distracting. Here is a great pic of my G20C (10mm)

Ive got a Gen3 17C and ive never noticed the fire coming out the top cuts.
ever.

the pic above is a 10mm, little more powder and 'umphhhh' coming out that one then the 9mm.

Absolutely. That pic wasn't meant for comparison.

When I had shot a 17C before I did notice the flash from the ports. Range lighting and ammo will all affect this.

Would the compensation on a 17C be noticeable for a female adult shooter or 11 year old girl?

i notice the reduction in the jump of the 17 with my 17C so im sure smaller people would notice it as well.
my daughters have shot mine and didnt mind it at all, they where 11 and 12 when they first shot it.

its by no means a massive reduction in the jump, its just a bit, say 20% if i had to put a number on it.
just lets you get back on target a millisecond faster.

Thousands.

Correct. But I would like to add "that you will never get back".
Also "that will not make you a better shooter". Most people spend this on guns, but should be buying ammo and a few pistol courses on how to shoot their firearm correctly.
But yeah, there wouldn't be much of an aftermarket if people did that. :)

Kinda like putting lipstick on a pig IMHO. At then end of the day it still is a Glock BUT as they say even ugly dogs get lucky once in awhile. The cool factor would be off the charts.

You've got that wrong. The lighter the slide, the less mass you have moving forward and backward. This results in a flatter shooting pistol. The parts that don't move (Guide Rod, Magwell Insert) is where you want to add weight.

I've got a full Zev Dragonfly build on a 17 and it shoots WAY faster than my stock 17. If you're going to spend money to modify your slide, strongly consider the Zev slides. They're lighter and built to tighter tolerances than you'll ever get a modified Glock slide. The RMR cut on the Zev is lower as well. I'm beyond satisfied with the money I spent. I bought it piece by piece so I didn't feel the whole hit at once.

All in for a full Zev gun with an RMR, you're looking at $4000

My frame is currently at Blackbox getting stippled the trigger guard undercuts done. Their stippling is a LOT nicer than Zev's

It depends on what you use the gun for. I shoot PPC and target bullseye just for fun. A heavier slide/gun is better in PPC/bullseye.
For IPSC/IDPA I would go with something like STI, if I were you.

It does not matter how much lipstick you put on a Glock, it is not 1911 or 2011.

Glock is an ok gun but not the go-to competition gun. Even in production, there are better options.

Depends on the competition. The Glock 34 and the M&P Pro dominate the IDPA pistol divisions and in particular SSP Division. Without the 5# 1st trigger pull for IPSC Production you likely would see more of the polymer striker fired guns in IPSC Production as well. They are competitive in USPSA Production Division. I am told the CZ's are just now beginning to make inroads in USPSA, a sport that does not have the minimum 5# 1st pull for their Production Division. The 1911 pistol is not significantly superior to the Glock/ M&P in 45acp for IDPA CCP Division either in the hands of the top shooters.

Different sports sometimes favour different platforms over time. Too, it is the shooter that wins not the gun. Vogel won the IPSC Worlds with a Glock 17. It was more Vogel than Glock IMHO but goes to show you what can be done when you have talent.

I really can't figure out heads or tails between the differences of a Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock 17. Does anyone have any input? The only thing that really sticks out to be is the backstraps (non-issue for me) and the size of the safety?

Interchangeable back straps on the Gen 4
Dual spring recoil assembly on the Gen 4
Different texture on the frame
Slightly different trigger bar

As far as function goes, they're the same. Buy whatever one you like the look of better.

Am I reading correct that the Gen 4 has it's own version of magazines and gen 3 mags will work in a gen 4 but gen 4 mags won't fit in any other generation glock?

Is the dual spring that big of an upgrade?

The mags are different because of the ambi mag release (forgot to mention that in the comparision). All the mags will work in any version, but you need the Gen 4 mags to utilize the mag release in leftie mode. If you're a right handed shooter, it's a non issue.

The new recoil system is more durable and lasts longer, but doesn't really change the function of the gun.
