so, what's so great about the 308 Win cartridge?

It's also an intended byproduct of gun rag writers on the payroll in recent years trying to sell all the hunters on 300 WM.

It's always amazing to watch the ignorant jump on the bandwagon.

.308 is the best all around do most everything round, has been for a long time, and will continue to be for a long time for those who do not fall for the BS.

You know the Win Mag came out in 1963 right? That's not exactly recent. The Weatherby has been around since the mid 40s.

For me, it's the following:
-I found a great deal on the EE on a Kimber Adirondack in 308. It's a rifle that I've been keeping my eye on for a while.
-Easy to find ammo and reloading components
-I've stocked an ample supply of relatively affordable surplus ammo (Hirtenberger) for practice.

Bahh the 270 is only good at showing how well marketing can work to sell something that's mediocre.
The 280 does what the 270 pretends to do

I am not a 270 fan, but even I know that this reeks of bs....

I never said it did EVERYTHING.

.308 is not what I would carry for Grizzlies.

Nope, but within range, I would feel very comfortable with its biggest child, the .358 win....

No, you said it was the best all arounder. That at least requires it to be adequate for all game that might be encountered.

I wouldn't even hesitate to use a 308 on Grizzly. IMO, Elk rifles and Grizzly rifles are one and the same.

Disagree...... the grizz and bison are fringe species most of us only dream of hunting....and if we can afford to do it, then we can afford a specialized rifle for the task, as Hoyt said, let's get real.......

Take all but the two species mentioned above out of the equation, and it's hard to argue against the .308 as an "all rounder".....

Sorry but I disagree, I bet there is is Grizzly within 3 miles of where I am standing. Within 10 miles of my house there are 8 species of Big Game, an even 10 is you count the Wolf and the possible Caribou.

I think it's telling that the 338 and 375 are rare guns in the wild. I use mostly the 303 and 8x57 and don't consider myself undergunned for anything.

Hell, you almost sound like you're serious. Around here it's so ordinary that's it's old and boring. Grampa
gun boring. It's the performance caliber for hunters that aren't even interested in guns.

I am serious. In the last handful of years I've seen countless hunters jump on the "new" 300 WM.

I KNOW it's old and boring as you do, however many are only recently getting the memo. Certainly in my region.

Great...... so pitter patter, get at 'er...... and tell us all what you used......also try a .358 win in. Your local grizz and tell us of your epic failure ..... I wager you won't have a story to tell.....

Ever shoot a short barrelled .308 GA precision Slamfire ? I own one and agree with the point you're making. And it even has killing power at 1000 beyond paper before someone makes that joke.

.308 is a very capable cartridge.

Among the best there is.

Not exactly sure what you are saying. My point is that Grizzly aren't a fringe animal and that any all rounder needs to be adequate for them. I wouldn't hesitate to use the 308 or 358 in a Savage 99.

My issue is with the 308 being the best all rounder, the 30-06 is simply better, that doesn't somehow make the 308 inadequate.
