.30-06 vs .308

This reminds me of the old Greek argument of how many spirits can dance on the head of a pin. Have both, shoot both, about the only reason I might like the 308 a bit more is cheaper milsurp plinking ammo. As a note, yes there is about 200 fps difference on factory loads, but if you load the 06 to the same average pressure levels as the 08, that widens a bit to around 300 fps. The 06 tends to be factory loaded a bit milder. But at the end of the day, dead with one is as dead with the other. Good bullets, well placed, helps one avoid a diet of deer tag soup. Now for our next argument, how about 222 vs 223?

This is how I see it.
The 308 is one of the most under rated but not over looked cartridges on this planet. I would not argue the fact with a 30-06 there almost the same, and the 308 in general will out shoot accuracy wise any 30-06 I have owned.
However the 308 at muzzle is only 25% less than the 300 win mag, and in hunting camps around the world the 308 win gets a bad rap.
FYI
Core lock bullets used (ie:)
300 win mag 180s = 3500 foot lbs
308 win 180s = 2800 ft lbs
So the 300 win mag kicks but right WELL! lets look at 500 yards

300 win mag 180s 500 y = 1350 f lbs
308 wim 180 500 y = 1100 f lbs HUMM!
30-06 -----------------= 1161 ft lbs
Is 200 f lbs worth talking about at 500 yards along with accuracy at that range!
As for the 30-06 at long distace500 yards the fps difference is less than 40 fps?
You be the judge!
I don't know why but gets a bad rap but one of the easiest rounds to shoot accurate at 300+ yards with almost the same energy as your Mags and equal to the 30-06.

Quiet... haters are gonna hate...

Having owned a truckload of each chambering, I still prefer the 30-06. When I want to drive a 200 grain pill at 2700 and pennies,
the 30-06 shines. The 308 is a great chambering, but just lacks that little bit of ooomph with heavy bullets. JMHO, D.

Well I have both and if forced between the two, I would choose 308. Handy short action, lots of commercial and component loading options. Will take anything I want to hunt within the 3-400 max that I should be shooting.

OH NO NOT AGAIN.............the only real answer is........................300 Wby or in default the 300 RUM.............who wants to drive a Ford Fiesta when one can drive a Ferrari ??????????

Oh ya, I forgot, shooting the 300 Wby or RUM requires more skill, so you gentlemen go ahead and argue about lesser cartridges and I'll continue to kill everything the planet has to offer with my 300 Wby...........:p:p:p;);):dancingbanana:

I dont hunt outside the country, but you might be interrested to know i i own a Merkel 141 375 H&H 2 barrel and a morning i did shoot 4 marmotts with it, i never found a proof they were dead but i am sure they are...

A 308 is enough for everything in NA except the big bear and Buffalo and i say that just to be politicly correct, a grizzly with a well placed 308 shot will fall down... JP.;)

I don't think the critters or the paper would show much diff , but reloading the 308 is way cheaper

Edit- gotta watch my wording around here . I should have said 10-20% less powder for max loads approx

I guess I need to go shopping :)

I still don't have a 30-06, and by following this logic I may be undergunned using my 300WM

I better get that 325 WSM set up quickly... ground hog season should be starting soon :)

I have owned both, and still own my .308. to be honest though, what put me off the 30-06 wasn't the round per say it was more the gun i was using. When I first got into shooting i bought an old p17, it was in rough shape, not much rifling left in the barrel. Being the newb that I was then and not having the knowledge that I now have, I got all pissed off and got rid of the gun and swore up and down that 30-06 was garbage. Fast forward a dozen years or so and i know different. I just haven't bothered to look back since I got my 308.
