Head-to-Head: Sig P210-6 Vs. Sig Sauer X5-L1 "The sequel"

Well boys I have both 1st Gen and new 2nd Gen X' series:

My 2nd Gen X Series is more accurate than the 1st Gen gun. Upon close examination I have found the the fit, finish and workmanship are superior on the 2nd Gen X Series gun. Just greater attention to detail & tighter fitted.

That's my experience.

Rich

Funny, I've had the opposite experience. My X5L1 is slightly superior to the Supermatch I recently got in every way. Just goes to show the variability between individual samples.

Great chart BillD! That's way easier to understand.

I'm also curious to know if Rich 1st Gen X5 is an L1. The L1 was supposedly better finished compared to the other models.

Courtesy of a U.S. Sig Forum :) Here's the origional "Sport" (as you mentioned above) chart. Interesting to see the origional MSRP (U.S. $$$) - no doubt they command more that that these days, if you can find one!

Very nice detailed charts Bill. Love to see the prices on the earlier guns Vs. newer production. Find it weird that the X6-L1 is at $100 less MSRP compared to the X5-L1.

That one is odd, don't think it's that way in today's used market for same LOL! That P220 X6L1 is a rare bird that would be nice to have too!

Yeah,

I've also read the the X6L1 was selling for cheaper compared to the X5 in the US when it was available a few years ago.

I remember when I got both my Mastershop P210 Legend Target and Super Target in the summer of 2012, the Legend Target was $2500 and the Super Target was $3500 before tax. In Oct. 2013, I placed an order for a X5-L1 from the same dealer I got my Super target, price was $3800. The X6-L1 was $3600, I got prices for both at the same time, so yeah, the X6-L1 was $200 less.

Funny enough BillD, they don't. The P229 Sport in particular can often be found for a steal. I suspect it's the offered calibres, as that's what makes me hesitate every time I see one. I'm a huge 9mm fan, dislike the .40cal, and don't want to load for the .357 sig......bottleneck PITA.

I certainly envy your ownership experiences of all these various Sigs HC!

Interesting, I've never seen one come up for sale (but I don't really look very wide either, just scan the EE here) so I figured they'd be kinda rare/$$$. A 220 Sport would tickle the fancy, but I agree on the other calibre options.

Either X-Six is awesome! Just found out from a fellow poster on one of the Sig forums that there is a new version of the P220 X-Six L1(new version is called P220 X-Six Classic).

As in a .45acp X6? Guess I better start saving.........

Good shoot out. My experience has been the same with the standard 210s. I'd be surprised if the Supertarget wasn't right there with the X models but can't say for certain at this point.

Good thing it didn't go through because I think you were misquoted. I bought an X5 in 2013 and the Level 1s were all selling at dealers between 2500-2800. Maybe the confusion was between the 220X6 and 226X6. I ordered an P220X6 in 2014 and was quoted $3600. At that time, the MSRP for the P226X6 was more than the P220X6, but the 226X6 was selling at dealers for between 3100 and 3300 (based on the last Gen 1 X6s I saw listed before the ban at Wanstalls and Reliable. Wanstalls sold a Gen 2 X6 Supermatch at around the same time for 4200). The tables above are super helpful for sure, but some of the MSRPs listed are from different times and there are a few errors (e.g. pricing on the 220X6 and 226X6 is reversed, trigger info on the entry and classic..).

Also, no one should get too fussed about the differences between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 level 1s. Attention to fitting and the triggers should be basically the same, and has been in my limited experience (but as mentioned by others i too have seen some QA/QC variability). It kind of boils down to - if you don't like the rail, get the Gen 1. If you want to mount an optic or do action shooting get the Gen 2 (the ergos on the Gen 2 were designed in response to comp shooters to allow for a higher hand hold/lower bore axis). For the average target shooter, both versions will be equally accurate in stock form i bet. Not being an action shooter, I can't speak to the advantages of the modern ergos of the Gen 2, but once the optic is mounted, it is no longer a fair fight in terms of how easily you can tap into the accuracy potential of the pistol. The trade off is a heavier more cumbersome package of course. Frankly I like them all.

Using a variety of ammo would have made a difference in group size but not necessary in a good way. The Swiss P210 was designed from the ground up to shoot the RUAG Pistolen Patrone 41 ammunition. It's a 124gr FMJ round nose bullet with a chamber pressure of 2600 BAR, thats 250 BAR hotter than the maximum pressure for 9mm ammo of today, velocity would be in the 1250-1300fps range at muzzle Vs. 1100-1200fps for the factory commercial 124gr ammo available now.

I've shot over 20k rounds with various P210's and the best accuracy as always been with the 124gr FMJ ammo. The twist of the barrel is optimized for that weight too.

I can testify to this.

I don't own one, however a couple of years ago had the good fortune of being able to try an older 210 on for size that belonged to the nice gent stationed next to me at the range. It put 5 shots inside of 3-3.5 inches at 25m with S&B 124 gr. FMJs. I can't recall the exact numbers off the top of my head, but I do know the S&B stuff is loaded somewhat hotter than the AE or PMC. I never forgot this because my jaw pretty much fell down between my ankles when I went and checked the target. That being said, I've needed one of these pistols ever since. My wife, however, recently discovered a love for the 210 and the way she's talking I think she might beat me to it. Lol. Never thought I'd see the day she'd consider cheating on her SP-01.

We'll actually be trying one or two out next week, so I will see what kind of ammo is used and report how we make out.

DISCLAIMER: A big move last year turned everything upside down and I haven't been shooting in over twelve months, so I'll be scraping the proverbial rust off. Looking forward to it.

Good stuff. I have a few cases of S&B 124gr FMJ and always had very good accuracy with this ammo. The P210 likes it. I should have brought a box or two with me when I did test both pistols.

You are probably right Graham. They must have the price quotes wrong because I couldn't justify paying a few hundreds more than my Supertarget at the time.

My current Gen 1 is a Tactical, I have previously owned a Gen 1 All Round and Tactical. All have been outstanding. As stated before the current Gen 2 X Series is the most accurate of them all and has superior fit and finish.....by a tiny margin than my Gen 1's. This is splitting hairs though.

Thanks Rich, is you new Gen 2 a Classic or a Supermatch?

Classic, yet it's so accurate I think it doesn't matter. Starting to think it's more accurate than my S&W PPC-9 !
(The German PPC Team guys swear that the X-5's are more accurate than PPC-9's + they also love PPC-9's)

Yes they are. I've owned both PPC-9 in 5" and 6". Also had both 952's in 5" and 6". Very accurate pistols.
