I'm considering trying a 223rem load with 55grn FMJ boat-tail bullet as gopher medicine.

Does anyone know for sure that it would be much less impressive terminal effects versus standard soft-point or ballistic-tip bullets varmint bullets? Does the FMJ just go right through them leaving a tiny hole?

Well , I'll have to try some again . (Buddy's milsurp , I use my reloads ) Maybe I was talking in comparison , I even prefer the v max to Sierra . But we were shooting at long range too , so maybe that made the diff or I wondered if the mil surp wasn't as accurate too because a lot seemed to be untouched but we did find some with holes in them . Didn't look for many but had to see some . Buddy uses reloads now too . It was last year over a few days and 4-500 rounds at estimated 80-90% hits , we did blame more misses on the milsurp .

What a concept , Eh?

An FMJ is supposed to yaw and break apart?
I'm thinking it's the frangilbe bullets that are supposed to break apart.

I gave up on FMJ research years ago. Supposed to be a "fur saver"...all they would do is go in the side and make a 90 degree turn. Make a mess of the back or come out the arse hole. If loaded down to 2700fps or less they apparently work better but who ants a varminter with the trajectory of a rainbow??

Goodness Gracious a fur saver you say.
Coyotes are much larger than them Alberia gophers the is talking about.
Hunting Regs in BC are likely much different than in Manitoba cause FMJ is prohibited for the purpose of hunting.
Now, it we are talking JHP , then I see the logic.
Anyways, it is time for some turkey, mashed speeds and yams and gravy and stuffing.
Did I mention Mashed spuds and gravel?
Happy Easter All,
Rob

We owe it to our quarry, be it vermin, meat or trophy to make a quick and humane kill.

That should answer your question.

Its the same in Manitoba FMJ, TMJ are all illegal for the purposes of hunting in Manitoba, its even illegal to be in possesion of FMJ while hunting

Any gophers I've touched with an FMJ got dead real quick and usually turned into a burger pile. I'm calling BS on the guys that say they're hitting gophers with them and they're running away, they simply aren't hitting them.

FMJ's or hardball illegal for hunting deer, moose and elk in Mamitoba... says nothing about furbearer animals. Law was put in place after the war when tons of surplus military ammo went on sale and the motherload of 303 rifles as well
