A rather unfortunate chain of events that resulted in the hunter getting mauled and shot. From Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance (Stephen Herrero) -

Rather unnerving!

I've had this kind of thing happen with an aggressive Bull Moose that kept getting back up and approaching until I brained it. Reflecting upon that experience it was time to go buy a more powerful rifle which was my 416 Rem. Mag. Sako AV Hunter. ;)

That's a very sweet piece of kit.

How was it that the 340Weatherby Mag (250gr.) at that range not drop the Bear in it's tracks? Too close with the wrong bullet, maybe?

Thanks! I got it converted from 416 Rem. Mag. to 458 Lott, and with the barrel converted my 375 H&H Mag. Zastava Fullstock Carbine to a 416 Rem. Mag.

I like to see game pile up instantly when shot and I generally get that with these rifles. Either of these should flatten 'Ol Ephraim. :p

So it is a proof that the puss feed fails in the most crucial moment.

Seems to be a performance deficit of some kind with the super 338.

Less risk if he had used something more substantial (and mechanically reliable)? A round that produces a massive wound channel and transmits debilitating shock to increase the chances of a quick demise of his quarry?

Picked up a spent .416 Rem Mag case at the range yesterday. The diameter of the .416 is huge?? I can drop a .375 into it down to the shoulder. Didn't realize how much bigger, wider the .416 is..

Interesting article in the 12th edition of Handloader's Digest, The 416 Remington Magnum: Load it for Bear. The authors (Ray Ordorica & Andy Runyan) believe 416 (or 411) 300gr bullets are better stoppers (inspite of the lower SD value).

They tell of a client who had wounded a big Bear with 3 shots from his 300 Win. Mag. They located the wounded Bear whereupon it was dispatched rather quickly with a single 300gr bullet impacting at 2700 fps -

More shock with higher impact speeds. I find the 416 caliber 300gr X and 350gr X or Mag-Tip bullets to be excellent Elk and Moose stompers. Haven't tried 400gr bullets yet.
