how many Rounds

On recent sheep hunts to northern BC where weight of my pack was a limiting factor, I carried 10 rounds. It was a fly in situation with lots of hiking to get above timber line into sheep country. More important to have adequate food and some foul weather gear in that situation. If I am hunting moose, bear or deer within an hour or so drive from home I carry 4 in the rifle, one in my pocket and another 5 or 6 in my day pack. It is probably excessive. Most I have ever fired was 6 rounds when I got into a pack of wolves.
Usually only 1 or 2 shots are fired if I am lucky enough to get a good opportunity at the intended quarry.

If the truck is within sight a loaded mag plus 5-6 in my pocket.

If I am walking and the truck is miles away 20-40 rounds. I usually don't go home every night when I am out hunting either so I take enough to make darn sure I won't run out.

Usually depends on the rifle I choose to take with me. If I'm hunting with friends who fire the same calibre rifle, I'll usually carry some extra as they are the guys who will go out with a loaded mag and leave everything else in the truck. Wouldn't be the first time I've had a buddy come screaming down a trail saying he was out of ammo and whatever he was shooting at was getting away.

My rule of thumb is carry 2 or 3 loaded mags with me, plus 12 extra on a belt pouch. May seem like overkill, but rather have them and not need them then need them and not have them. I usually also have 1 or 2 boxes of ammo surplus to this in the truck or at camp.

When I'm out and about with the shotgun, I have one of those 25-round ammo belts I like to wear. Keeps them all at hand for quick reloads when necessary, and 25 rounds is usually enough lol

5 in the gun

4 in a spare mag

4 cheap fmj for signal shot in another mag

3-5 mouse farts in a breast pocket for grouse and bunnies.

And 100-200 back at camp in case we tag out and it turns into an impromptu range day :)
(Literally never happens though lol)

Shouldn't you have multiples of 3 for signal shots?

I usually put 4 in a bolt gun or 5 in a lever. Then 4 or 5 more in my pocket. Back in my vehicle I usually have 10-40 rounds in a plastic box (reloads).

Nope. That's what the SPOT's for.

Our gang is a little old school, in that we still fire off a "celebratory signal shot" (2 shots, 10 seconds, 2 shots) when we harvest an animal.

We stopped doing it when we got walkie talkies, but started again after the first deer. It just wasn't the same. It gets your blood pumping when you hear a shot across the valley, then a few minutes later hear the two shots, then excitedly count to 10 and pray you'll hear two more!

Carrying the 30-06, 6 rounds in the rifle, 6 more in my right coat pocket in a modified plastic cartridge holder that used to come in IVI/Dominion boxes so they don't rattle around. 10 more in my left coat pocket if I am walking a lot which doesn't happen much anymore. Plus if I am in a camp another 20 rounds by my bunk. Remember a gun is just a useless fancy stick without ammunition to put in it.

I have only been hunting a couple years now but rifle is loaded with 5 and i carry another 5 in my bag for good measure. I have always been a minimalist camper and a pack of 20 rounds weighs just as much as my sleeping bag, I also hunt a lone 95% of the time so I make one shot really count, I always come home with ammo...Except when I goto the range hahah. For waterfowl hunting Ill bring serval boxes.

If I'm hunting the small Haida Gwaii deer I pack as much ammo as I can get my hands on one box in my pockets and the reast in the boat but that's not a typical hunt
Wen using one of my singl shot rifles I pack 5 rounds and keep the rest of the box at base camp
If I was going on a guided hunt I would want two boxes just in case
a long hike in and camp hunt I would want a full box of ammo at the camp but no real advantage to pack a bunch of extra ammo around
