So at the local gun show today, I walked by the MNRF table where there were 4 COs talking to the public. Being who I am, I looked to their holsters to see their sidearms and was a little perplexed by what I saw.

They were carrying USPs. This was more than a little odd to me since COs had informed me a few years back that they were switching to the P2000. However, at the last couple of shows, the COs present were carrying P30s. So...again this time, I stopped and asked what their sidearms were. Yes indeed; they were carrying USPs. However, as a couple of them told me, they were also issued P30s. And P2000s. And P2000SK pistols. In fact, it seems they are issued multiple pistols, as one officer said that he had a USP as well as a P30. All of these guns are .40s.

However, they also said that next year, they will be going with a SIG in 9mm; the same one that will be used by the OPP. However, nobody "knows" what that pistol will be...

So prison guards get 4 pistols each while the military, with a few exceptions, still has to use 1950's BHP's.......ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I'd take a new HP over any current HK offering, but the ones in the military are old and tired.

Looks like the military should fire their acquisitions team and poach the guys doing that job at corrections.

Christ, can't they just purchase bog-standard 9mm Glocks or other option if external safeties are desired. Pick something and stick with it for sake of easy training and logistics.

Smuggling contraband must be pretty lucrative.

Wow classy comment there bud.

Anyhow,

Yes Federal Corrections Officers do carry firearms outside the fence or in towers / catwalks. HK Pistols and Colt C8 Rifles amongst other things. They have some pretty nice gear actually.

As for Fish Cops not sure what they carry out here in AB. I recall Glocks but the P30s or P2000s would be nice too.

Im all for these folks whether "Guards" Or "Fish/Game cops" having high quality gear. I know I wouldnt want basic or substandard gear to use at my job when others have it so much better.

Professionals should have professional tools. Just like Chefs, Doctors, Mechanics, Pilots, hookers, plumbers, framers or anyone else that works a trade or otherwise.

Being a current CO all I can add to this is sometimes internal politics plays to much of a role, where by the right people don't get to make decisions. Here in NS, we have a provincial police standard, where the DOJ has created a policy that states ALL sworn law enforcement personnel in the province will use/carry the Sig Sauer P226 Double-Action only (DAK) 9mm pistol. This has a number of advantages, one being multiple departments can get in on the same renewal contracts, something my agency did in 2015 with Halifax Regional Police. Another being all agencies can operate with inter-operability should a crisis situation arise. Fed. agencies are another story....

Now that's funny :-D

(Even though this whole thread has gone off the rails from the conservation officers the op was referring to)

Ha ha, that's not a big deal. It was something I asked out of curiosity as what I noticed in their holsters was not what I had been told would be there. And, so, I thought I would share the information. That humour was injected is a good thing.
