I just received an old P14 in 303 and the barrel is cracked or split a tiny bit at the muzzle. What caused that. I shot a few rounds through it no issues. I want to sell it, but if it is dangerous I wont.
TIA

plugged or partially plugged muzzle. Nothing to do with excessive pressure. Barrel should be shortened and re-crowned.

When the barrel is plugged and the gun is fired, would not the result be excess pressure ?

No more than driving a car too fast over a speed bump indicates that the road is unfit to drive.

It could very well have come off the factory line with a flaw in the steel that the barrel was made of.

In any case, the smart money would be to first determine how far back it is cracked, then determine the course of action from there.

A cut and crown might be in order, back boring the barrel might keep it looking original while keeping any further possibility of further damage at a minimum, or the barrel could be swapped off and the action become a donor for a 'project'.

Cheers

The "excessive pressure" only occurred at the blockage at the muzzle. Excessive pressure is not the correct terminology for a burst barrel at the muzzle caused by an obstruction.

Even if a rifle has been exposed to excessive pressure by an overloaded cartridge it does not automatically make the rifle unsafe.

In this particular instance it would appear that a cut and crown and go shoot it would be fine.

...i'd cerrosafe the muzzle to see if the bore itself has been deformed? i'd start with that. nor would i infer from what was originally written that it was a pressure issue. if the bore is concentric, then something else might have happened...

...but what do i know?

Take a micrometer and measure various places on the barrel behind the crack to locate bulges.Harold

Now you will have to scrap that old shooter as there is no allowance to shorten the barrel for repairs due to dumb ass laws we have.Doesn't that make you smile.Or just have it shortened as there probably isn't anyone smart enough pick up on that to give you grief. :)

what? where did you hear something so ridiculous?

YOU cant do it in your basement with a hacksaw, but it can absolutely be done....

I don't know the barrel length off hand but I think anything repaired under 18" and it wouldn't fly. Someone should look that up for correct repaired length. He may indeed be able to have that happen.
There is somewhere the procedure for sure. A quick search say's the barrel is 26" long so that repair wouldn't make it to short.

I'm not aware of whether the sight is dovetailed into the barrel or a band around the barrel, but if the latter, wouldn't it be a nest looking rifle if shortened to lose the damage & reinstall the sight band to maintain the length of barrel in front of it, with stock mods as necessary.

Tanker P14 lol
