This whole UN marking thing has me paranoid, some people claiming prices going up hundreds of dollars per firearm, and im no rich kid so if i can save by buying now i will.

So im going to make one more long gun purchase prior to june 1, for hunting North American game.

Im going for my CORE in few weeks, already got a SKS which i will use for a deer rifle to start off with this year/season. But eventually would like to expand into hunting moose/bear other larger deadlier game so want a rifle in a larger caliber with more put down power, and one that can be easily scoped for longer shots if needed(never hunted elk/moose, dad only hunted deer, but I hear that moose/elk are either shot very close range or very long range, not much in between). So this will be my first scoped rifle, to be honest i prefer iron sights but irons for hunting at 300+ yards is not something i want to partake in, and i want to become competent with a scoped rifle.

If this rifle could be tamed down enough for deer that would be great to, or i can keep using the SKS and have this be a large game rifle only it really doesnt matter. Ive been hunting with my dad for years and never seen a deer shot at more than 150 yards, usually closer to 50, and i can do that with my SKS all day long no problem.

So onto caliber selection, from initial research it seems you can load a variety of sized bullets and power loads in the following calibers:

.270 , .308, 30-06, 300WM, or even .338WM.

Im not adverse to recoil, i have shot a lightweight .338WM before, and while i wouldnt want to make a afternoon at the range shooting nothing but a .338WM i would have no issues hunting with it if it justified, and firing a few rounds each range trip over time to become proficient.

Am also open to rifle suggestions, budget $1000 for the rifle ill worry about scope later.

So far seem like savage arms offers alot of bang for the buck but am open to suggestions, alot of it will be limited to what i can get my hands on by june 1.

EDIT:

IMO, look no further than the EE. There you will find what you need without the need for taxes etc. Take your pick on any of the calibres you have on your list. Save the money for a good scope and ammo to make or practice with. For a $1000 bucks you should find a great dinner getting tool and all told with a good scope and accessories. If you are looking to puff your chest with the boys or have a specific preference it is easy to spend a G on a rifle only. My 2c.

Any of the above in a rifle that fits you . I like Savages , but the Weatherby Vanguard is a great rifle for the money . I've owned , or still own , all the calibers you've listed . For some reason , I find myself packing the 06 more often than not . YMMV

Buying a rifle with sights will eliminate many models right out the gates.

A Tikka Battue in 30-06 would probably be a good choice for you in a bolt gun.
A Remington 7600 in 30-06 would be good if you're ok with a pump action.

If it were me (and I'm not worried about sights).... I'd just buy a Stainless CRF bolt action in 30-06 and call it done.

Grab one of the many 30'06 Husqvarna 1640's listed at Tradex for <$500, grab a Bushnell Elite 2-7 or 3-9 for $220 from Al Flahertys (wait until Friday as Bushnell has a 25% off mail in rebate starting Friday) and your choice of rings and bases, have $200 left for ammo.
You could even grab one with a scope, lots listed for $495 or less with optics.

This man speaks wisdom. By far the best deal going.

338-378 Wby, youll need to save up for ammo though.
Rob

couple rounds a range session and he will be a great white hunter in no time, just like shooting an sks.

Only on the internet do guys hunt at 300 yards with iron sighted rifles.

I called up one of my dads old hunting buddies yesterday because i know he has a huge long gun collection(40+ rifles). And went over to his place and handled a few to get a feel for them to see what will fit me well. Some nice guns to be sure that ill never be able to afford(weatherby mark V's, sako 85's etc) but also some of what he calls bush guns(guns that he will take into the field) I handled a remington 700 SPS and a remington 783, weatherby vanguard s2, Ruger american.

The one that jumped out at me the most was the weatherby vanguard s2. The stock fit me well and it felt lighter than a few of the others which is a consideration for a take into the bush gun. He said it had a sub MOA gurantee with weatherby ammo from the factory too which is not something i had thought possible for a sub $800 gun. He said the barrel heats quick so its a hunter not a range queen but was the most accurate sub $1000 gun he had ever owned.

The husq's suggested above indeed look good, a buddy has one ive handled them before, that exact model pictured actually. And while good rifles they didnt jump out at me like that weatherby vanguard s2....

so many things to consider.

Maybe i was not clear in the OP, i prefer irons, but would not prefer to hunt with them past about 200 yards, hence the getting a new rifle for longer range 300 or greater yard shots to become proficient with a scoped rifle. The new rifle does not need irons, it will be scoped.

Up until you mentioned big bruins, i would have said 308 and call it a day. If you think you MIGHT hunt them once or twice, i would still stay with the 308. Loaded up, it can do the job.

Ammo and components are cheap. If deadly game is on the agenda all the time, 300WM gets the nod.

I'm fond of my Remington 700. It's my go to for everything. There are as many who will agree that will disagree on my choice. I like options, the R700 provides that.

Lot of rifle options. Almost too many. As for UN markings, there are so many of such rifles in Canada, i wouldn't worry about buying before June.

No requirement for a rifle that will red-mist a critters at 300. Any non mag calibre from 6.5 up will get'r dun.

I was going to say Remington 700 BDL in 7mm Rem Mag. More than enough caliber to hunt anything in North America, it still comes with Iron sights I believe and the action is pretty much indestructible. My dads had one for 30 years and it shoots just as good as the CDL SF I bought 5 years ago.

+2^. Not a 30/06 fan 'cause it's boring (waiting....waiting....I hear them coming!) but the above setup will work on most N/A game. But because I'm me (and I'm a freak as it's pointed out frequently) I would go with 9.3x62 (all necessary items available at Tradeex).
You need to choose what you feel comfortable shooting and fits you. Remember its not the power of the rifle; its the placement of the shot. You can have all kinds of power but a crappy shot will cause much consternation. Lower power and a good hit will usually mean "game down".
