One do it all in NA Rifle

If you can hunt everything in NA, you can have as many rifles as you want. That's the reality.

That leaves either an academic answer for something that isn't going to be done anyway, or an eccentric multi-millionaire that just wants to do it because he can do it. A third possibly is an avid and wealthy hunter who is bored spitless by rifles.

In any case, the answer is .300 Win. :)

You can never have enough guns.....
Although I recently dropped a 7-08 from my collection since I have a 7x57, 7x64, and 7mmRem. The 7-08 is nice, just didn't make much sense anymore.

It's all a question of druthers, I guess, but for hunting, if I had a good 308, I would not replace it with a 300 WM. For 95% of hunters, there is nothing a 300 will do that at 308 won't (btw, I have both). If I wanted a heavier thumper than 308, and it was to be my only hunting gun, it would be something in the 338-375 range. Heavier bullet and bigger hole, even on the way in, by almost 50%.

Reloading makes your choices much broader. I just got my CZ 550 in 375 H&H shortened to 20". Not light, but I can load plinker to African level in one rifle.

OP, I applaud your choice...... so dont get me wrong, but what does "do it all" mean to you?....

We have the biggest diversity of game size this side of Africa here..... (speaking only of small deer to bison to grizz)..... my personal opinion is that no one rifle will cover them all..... but the .308 is a great start.....

Would you hunt Grizz with a 35 Whelen?

I don't have any grizz experience........on paper, within my limitations, absolutely if I had to.....

Few people in my circumstance that can afford a grizz hunt would worry about using one gun for everything.... in fact, using one gun for everything isn't a concern of mine...... but grizz do not play into the equation.... but I am not the OP either.....

I know so many rifles that have "covered them all" to know theoretical discussions on the subject should largely be ignored. I'm not sure why people keep insisting on beating that drum over and over. Most of it comes from things never experienced and shots that have never been taken. Great start? Good grief...

As usual chuck, you know your experiences and nobody else's.......

Given the OP's parameters, a .308 is a great choice.... feel free to intervene and tell us all which species (except grizz and bison), should not be hunted with a .308 in North America....... both of those species are limited draw and likely a fantasy for someone in the op's position..... Is here something within the OP's parameters that can't be harvested with a .308?..... or did I miss something?

Brad. Tell me why the 308 can't take a Grizzly or Bison?

Oh, and how exactly would I know someone else's experience?

Not all opinions are created equal.

How many grizz have you taken with a .308?...... and if you had $25k on the line, for a grizz hunt would you pull the .308 out of the safe?....

That is what normal joe is asking here......

If booking a grizz hunt or bison hunt and taking a .308, .223, .22lr, dominion arms 12 gauge or Bella's .22 is your thing and you have $25k or are a resident where you can land a grizz tag then fill your boots.....

OP asked for a good all around gun....... I highly doubt he has grizz and bison in mind..... but I did answer accordingly....

If I had a choice of only one center fire rifle i would choose a Ruger GSR in 308 with the synthetic stock. This rifle comes with a muzzle break which reduces the recoil to the same as a 223 and is just over six lbs with iron sights and is thirty seven inches in length with the muzzle break, also it is very robust and provides good accuracy and offers the option of either a scout scope or a conventionally mounted scope. It is available with either ten, five or three round magazines.
