I've run Pelican and the Cabelas Xtreme case, not much difference aside from the cubed foam. Both very strong. I depend on Pelicans for most of my field gear (more $$$ and more fragile than guns) and they work well, but I've not had any issues with the Cabelas cases either.
For soft bags, the Cadex line is quite stiff and padded very well. Much more than others I've had. For range trips it works well as long as you don't put other gear on it. For hiking, a good sling or my Eberlstock work very well.
For people worried about damage in a soft case. What damage? Bent barrels? Twisted scope rings? If you're talking about spending 300-400 on a Pelican case for transport, I'm assuming you have a decent rifle with solid rings and optics, and i bet 80% of the replies here are talking about NF, Steiner, Vortex HD, S&B, etc, with quality rings and rails, heavy barrels, excellent stocks or chassis rifles.
What makes you think ANYTHING you do to it in a decent soft case will damage it between your house and the field or range? I think they are much tougher than you expect, unless you are worried about dents and dings from use.
I put quite a few backcountry miles on my Eberlstock pack with scabbard, using the scabbarad as the case when tossing it in the truck or bed of the truck, then hiking to shoot, then home again. At that time I was hauling a TRG22 with a NF on it. never had an issue in 2 years. These days, I'm not so fussy I guess. Unless I'm stacking cases in the truck, a soft case is all that's warranted.
