Odd request from prospective buyer

I have an ad on the EE.
I get a message requesting a picture of the item on a newspaper showing the the date.
Would this show that I actually have the thing?
Does this indicate that they are unsure of my integrity?
It just seems odd to me.

I've asked for pics to prove the seller has the item... Today's paper & your username on a piece of paper in the pic would prove to me you have it...

And I would not take it personally, when someone doesn't know you it is not unreasonable to ask for specific pics etc...

Cheers
Jay
P.S. Here is a pic I asked for from a seller to prove he had the item as there was no way for him to grab the image off the net or create it & send it in a few minutes... What did I ask him to put in the pic?

It has never happened to me before. I guess I should go to my recycling bin and pull out a paper.
It will be difficult to include the SN as its on the grip strap. Maybe a side shot.

Not uncommon. Makes sense in a way.

Had one member ask for an image of the gun and a card with his GCN handle written on it.

I just saw an EE post where the seller has the buyer initiate the transfer. I didn't know you could do that. Makes sense.
The buyer gets to verify that the item exists with the seller and the seller doesn't complete the transfer until the funds are received.
Kind of a win-win.

This send the money first arrangement has always bothered me.

Well I took a crappy pic with my crappy canon and sent it off.
I guess there are all kinds of scammers with access to these boards.
Thanks for the insight.

Some times you have to jump through a few hoops to ease someone concerns of buying over the internet. I have and do ask for pictures with user names, and have had the same expected of me too. Good practice IMO.

Guess I am out of luck as I read the paper ON LINE.

There's many ways to prove you have the item, today's paper just happens to be what the guy asked for.

My pic above is an example, as would putting your username & date on a piece of paper with the item etc...

Cheers

Seems odd to me with your feedback.

I live rural, have enough of a post history and trader rating, and don't support the local garbage paper. I'd tell the person if they don't feel comfortable dealing with me, to find another person to deal with.

Even something hand drawn to the effect of "Hi I'm saskgunowner101 and I think dixda is the manliest man alive!!!" with a picture of a coin, a cat pic, or a lighter. Pretty sure that would accomplish the same thing.

That's how I do it. User name with the item along with the date the ad is posted.
It isn't fool proof as it only proves someone using my CGN handle actually has the item advertised. Doesn't mean they still can't scam you!
It's always buyer beware, on the EE, as in life.

Some user accounts--including a sponsoring dealer's-- were compromised in a phishing scam earlier this year. Communications from those cracked accounts looked legit, so asking for a verification photo, even from a high rated seller, is a safe way to be more sure of the transaction.

When I am the seller I don't mind providing a pics with my CGN name on paper, however, has the seller I was asked once to provide pics of my car license and RPAL, which I said NO !!! , absolutely not required as a seller...

Actually it was the wanting the SN showing with the newspaper that made me wonder WTF
Being olds cool, I always thought that a mans word was his bond, messaged or otherwise.
But, I do understand if someone wants to be sure their money isn't going to be lost.
I forget what a crazy world it has become. Thanks to all for replies.

Too funny!!!( although that was my first instinct, we have to play nice)

That fellow went through a lot of effort to sell a Heinkel knife.
