The Haida Gwaii looks like a hunter's paradise and the rain forest is nothing like others.
Would love to visit this place any idea on non-resident hunting there (from Ontario)?
I read the BC hunting regulation we either need an outfitter (which you said there are none) or we need a big game accompanied hunt which is a BC resident has a permit to accompany a non BC resident hunter, do you know if the Island is any different?

Haida Gwaii is still part of BC so same rules apply if I did not offer to take a albertan I would have offered
We get are ammo from the local Co-op so can't be fussy it all works the same no mater the grain
The 30-06 is the most used calber by locals followed by 243 and 22lr deer are not particular on what there shot with
Totally agree .... we used larger calibres with no problems and didn't buy anything special for the trip, but when you see these animals, you'll understand that any light rifle calibre would work fine. We had one rifle with a scope, but most (maybe all?) were shot with open sights and distances were short .... sometimes ridiculously close. I think iron sights would be ideal here and head and neck shots were possible too, if you had a larger calibre and were worried about meat damage.
We did have a very close encounter (in terms of distance) with a big bear that willfully ignored a warning shot in the air, but in a second encounter, a shot over the shoulder sent him packing. It was not afraid of people. We had a bear tag, but we weren't interested in a rug or skinning a bear in the rain .... it was more for a just in case scenario. Because of that encounter, I would prefer something not too light in terms of caliber, but even then, I'd feel okay with any medium sized calibre or better ...... I'd just use whatever my regular hunting rifle was; no need to complicate things.
But I do want to go back one day ... even if it's just to camp or whatever. Such a beautiful place.

You must come on one of my black tail hunts , tony and I took one each last year..... 15 minutes apart at 20 yards. Both bucks were standing in the exact same spot for both shots LOL
I'm down the hill dressing mine and i hear a shot haha and then see a buck tumbling straight towards me. Too much fun and we both remarked about how awesome it would be to take you in there
damn I offered to mentor hunters in my black tail haunt, 2 seasons in a row and not one has made the time to come out..... silly excuses everytime. Not making those offers anymore.... not till a "real keener" comes along.

375, .30-06, .300, 7 mag all great. Bears react to shock and any cartridge that you can say does less meat damage delivers less shock, that's why I like lighter constructed bullets in .375 for Grizzly too. Meat damage is good for Grizzlies, not so much for blacktails admittedly, I'll stop before I get a good derail going too.
Not sure if I have the USFWS bear protection report digitized or not but I really should and have it stickied...it would save us a lot of typing.
Back to the tiny deer frapping. I think this is the perfect opportunity to buy a 257 Roberts.

Went through half the thread. I am not a fan of the SKS for hunting, but just got a CZ 527 in 7.62x39 for my lady to use. Going to put on a low power B&L and try it tomorrow.
Just moved to Texada, no cats, no bears. Little inbreed Blacktail, the size of domestic goats.

Four things
Firstly, don't sticky it. What else are we to do on bear defense Monday
Second, I would like to hear opinions of guys with direct terminal experience on bears. Ardent springs to mind. To subvert Bruce Lee....sawdust doesn't fight back.
Thirdly, by the looks of it....this is 25-30 years old. While calibers have been invented....a 30 cal 180gr @ 2800 is still the same.
Fourth, and this ties in to 2 and 3. There have been some new designs in bullets. How does that change the effectiveness of the pretty standard 30-06 load above. Monometals, stout, frangible?
To tie back to Blacktail, I am looking forward to seeing what a 120'ish grain x39 softpoint does to a Bambi. Gotta keep em off the bumper, ..... overgrown rabbits.
an nice light accurate 7.62 x 39 bolt gun would be an excellent choice for Texada (and haida gwaii) , something I've pondered a few time, just haven't found the rifle I like yet. It's too bad there aren't more bullet weight choices in x39. My box of Black Hills 150gr sp were used up long ago and i don't think they are made anymore.

With regard to #4, I don't know if bullet advancements have made things "better". a 180 Nosler at 2800FPS would be just about right. A stiffer bullet wouldn't transfer as much shock to the bear an might possibly not open as much. My guess would be that they would be too much of a good thing.

My experience is big fat bears die on their own shadow more with mid range for caliber weight bullets moving quickly, that aren't overly stiffly constructed. Basically the average load you find on the hardware store shelf, and preferably .30-06 speed and faster. The partition and accubond are about ideal if moving 2400-2500fps or so and up at impact. Not sure if that jibes with the article have to get some work done here and can't read it yet. I'd take a .30-06 with a 165 or 180 way, way, way before a .45-70 with 405s for big Grizzlies.

And a .375 H&H is more of a good thing at 235-270grs, mid weight range 260gr partition again comes to mind... but .375 is by no means needed to kill them reliably. Should be noted on the side the partition is quite a soft bullet, it just has a backup plan as Dogleg puts it.
