As some of you can relate, so many guns to buy but budget is always an issue. Going to buy my first 1911 (.45). I prefer buying old guns and milsurps at this time of my life. So this is probably going to be my one and only new 1911. Will always look out for vintage 1911 but due to pricing this will be very unlikely.

Remington has a rebate so the R1 is around $750 and the 1991 I am guessing around $1100.

Accuracy is not an issue. Both guns will be more than adequate for my shooting skill.

If you can only have ONE old school 1911. 45, what would you buy? Just to like to hear your thoughts.

Thanks. Look forward to the discussions.

I bought the Remington R1 stainless because it didn't have all the fancy (ugly) front serrations, rails or other stuff that made it look fugly. Plus, It had a bit of heritage since Remington made some original 1911's for the war effort. The one up they have on the Colt imo is the better sights without being novak style or aftermarket looking. Mine has been 100% reliable and fun to shoot. If I had to decide again, I'd still buy the Remington.

I have an R1 government, no bells no whistles, for wild bunch shooting. It is as near to the original as you will find. I like it a lot, and it's as accurate as my SIG. and have never had any sort of malfunction with it. I would by another one no problem. The other one I was looking at was the springfield armory gov't model in OD green, but they can be hard to find

I like my R1, WWII Remington for reference. you could get a norc, they look pretty good too and cheap.

Very nice WW2 Remington ! That is what I really want but will be very hard to find and pricey. Have too many other WW2 milsurps I want to buy at the moment.

I have considered other old school 1911s (including Norinco) but if I can only have one (for now) I will either go Colt or Remington. You know this hobby, there is never enough money to support it.

How much would I need to fork out for a WW2 1911 ?

I won both a Colt 45 Stainless Gov 1911 and the 9mm Colt Comp model parkerized. Bought both new. Price for the stainless was $1550 and the Comp was $1345. Love both. They are expensive, but you get what you paid for. Both very well made and tight. I hear Remington has a quality control issue with their rifles. Not sure about their handguns though.

I liked the R1 but hated the big ugly sights. If I had kept it I would have investigated GI sights

I honestly can't say whether a base model Colt is any better, but they do cost more and I was willing to pay it for the new model series 70.

Though the dollar was better then.. The prices are stupid right now.

The Remington is nice if you don't mind the sights that spoil the GI look.

Or wait for a used 1991 model Colt in factory trim.

I personally like the look of the Springfield military Model. Never owned one, and there are some more departures in the style dept, but it looks good...

Nothing wrong with those unmarked norinco 1911a1 guns either. If you find one that someone has cleaned up the trigger on then you're laughing. They aren't bullseye guns, but you're not looking for that anyway.

there is a 1914 gov't colt for sale at my club for $2200, nice but way too much for me. I saw a Remington WWII on the EE that was around $1K I believe, maybe more, i considered it as mine has been sand blasted and re-blued, some of the remington info is hard to see. The R1 is a nice shooter and shots better than I do, thou I can put them in the center if I take my time. colts are nice but like you said pricey. The R1 will set you back around 6-700 used and as stated, a quick look, says there are 7 of them up for sale.

you should be up on the EE, soon. i'd say by monday or tues. if not pm a moderator, only took me a couple days, but that was 6yrs ago.

Oh that's bad. Lol

No, the regular R1. They're just too large and squared off.

In my stodgy old aesthetic there are only 2 types of 1911 that really do it for me - something as close to an A1 style as possible (and Remington gets points for having the proper thumb safety, if not the sights) and Colt's Series 70 National Match.

the rear sight on the R1 is a little blocky compared to the original and slightly larger. The front sight on the R1 is quite large compared to the original but is in a dovetail cutout on the slide. I would have preferred as close to the original as possible when I first got it but now my eyes suck so the slightly larger sights are better.

Yes, I am aware of the Remington quality issues (in their rifles) but the R1 has good reviews. I am going to pick up a R1 first (due to the pricing) but I can see a Colt Government in the future. There is no such thing as last gun or only gun with this hobby.
