BlackTail Deer

How much meat are you realy going to loose shooting game a deer threw the ribs..... we shoot a ton of deer with slug guns both sabot and foster .thy seem to damage more meat then rifles if you hit them in the shoulder ...
 
I think people are overthinking things a bit ..... my experience is close up shots and head shots are actually very realistic.

Bears are big, but they're black bears. Deer are small ... very small. Don't buy a new rifle ..... save your money for the expensive ferry.

It's an incredible place to go .... just beautiful.
 
what's the stats on black bear attacks on Haida Gwaii , say over the last 10 years..... not confrontations requiring a conservation officer response but actual bears attacking humans and injuring them or killing them? I'd be curious to know if the number even warrants discussing "bear defense" in a black tail deer hunting thread.
Seems this place is overly fascinated with bear defense LOL it's getting kinda stupid really.
If your afraid of bears and find yourself having to buy a rifle for bear defense while intending to go hunting for deer...... stay home LOL

I agree. There are plenty of black bears on Van Isl and a lot more people here and I don't ever remember hearing about a bear attack, not saying it couldn't happen though. I think you would have a better chance getting struck by lightening.

Don't get me wrong pete.... I am not one of those "pack anywhere and everywhere" guys.....

But statistics only show death.... not injury etc, heck I bet that guy's vid wasn't accounted for...

I just think people need to be cautious and educated around bears.....

I know of one incident of a black bear claiming into a boat well food fishing my buddy smack the bear in the head with a ore
The young bear jumped back into the river but it's not a attack just two guys fighting for a fish Haahaa
 
I live on Haida Gwaii. Nobody I know worries about Bears when hunting. You have a weapon when hunting, you should be covered lol. Had a few bears come at me while working in the woods but it is pretty rare event. Your 30-06, is fine just shoot for the neck. If it is not a close shot but a big deer, poke it through the ribs to be safe. If it is a smaller one that is far off then wait for the next one that is closer. I use everything from .222 to 300 wsm.
