The reason I was told was because since they now had the carbine, there was no need as before there was only the rifle. As a logistics based guy I suspect the decision had more to do with trying to simplify supply and training (only need 5.56 and a small quantity of 9mm vs before where you had 5.56, a decent quantity of 9mm, and 12 gauge).
Everyone I know loved the MP5, and I can't really think of a much better option for CQB simply because of the accurate high volume of fire you can put down with those small little things. In the end I think it has more to do with the desk sitters pushing worse options on people for simplicity.
