The reason I was told was because since they now had the carbine, there was no need as before there was only the rifle. As a logistics based guy I suspect the decision had more to do with trying to simplify supply and training (only need 5.56 and a small quantity of 9mm vs before where you had 5.56, a decent quantity of 9mm, and 12 gauge).

Everyone I know loved the MP5, and I can't really think of a much better option for CQB simply because of the accurate high volume of fire you can put down with those small little things. In the end I think it has more to do with the desk sitters pushing worse options on people for simplicity.

Brutal. Because the slugs we were issued were Remington Sluggers HV.

I shoot those out of my 870 with an SGA stock and 28 inch barrel, bit of a difference eh? Can't say I liked 3 inch slugs out of an 8 lb gun, not sure I'd like to try em out of yours

Guess heating a hot coat hanger/cleaning rod is the easier way to get them out now. Should have, I got in enough crap on that tour.

Breaching doors and clearing rooms, also used for ship boarding.

Pest control for rabid dogs, birds near airfields, polar bears etc...

Pretty well all purpose above. I still believe it holds a strong place in LE despite the popularity of the carbine. We'll see things swing back around, as it is a fabulous force multiplier under pressure.

The ones we use in my regiment are 870 police magnums with synthetic furniture. No flashlights at all. I have seen guys that are issued them,tape mini mag lights to the barrels.

The MP5 was an excellent platform and great for CQB in a ship environment. I don't really know why they decided to give it the axe. They were getting pretty beat up, perhaps they didn't want to pay to replace them. I was told by an SO guy that they wanted to go with 5.56 instead of the 9mm because of its penetrating qualities. The 9mm caused to many ricochets in a steel hulled vessel. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. It seemed to make some sense at the time.

That's oversimplified, but basically, true.
