The TA02 is a heavy scope at 18 oz with mount and battery. If it were me I'd look for another model. I don't know "Town Post" though...is it like kijiji where you meet up or would buddy expect you to send him cash? For a face-to-face meeting I'd be tempted to have a look at it at that price. If the guy's not on CGN it'd be hard to sell a $1000+ scope to the average rifle shooter so maybe he's looking for quick cash. I Googled up "ACOG TA02 Box" and found a few others with low-ish serial numbers (00000292 and 00001111) so that's not necessarily unusual.
I'd be tempted to meet up, check the box and any contents (like manuals, stickers, lens cloth, etc.) and have a look at the sight. I know the box that North_Sylva posted above is different but the one you posted looks like a Trijicon box to me.It's like kijiji as far as I know and you can meet up face to face. The dude also has a TR24 for $750 which is a believable price for that. Does trijicon verify serial numbers?

Genuine Trijicon® ACOG® scopes can be identified by three distinguishing characteristics:
1. Every ACOG® will be marked with the serial number on the top of the scope, both on the eyepiece and the main housing
2. All Trijicon® ACOG® scopes have a statement on the left side of the unit indicating that the sight contains tritium
3. The words “Trijicon® ACOG®” are forged into the main housing and appear as raised letters
If you are uncertain whether a particular item is a genuine Trijicon® product, please contact Trijicon® Customer Service at (800) 338-0563 for additional information.
