Hi all,

I'm curious about whether a Mossberg 4x4 in 270 would be worth while as a first hunting/range gun.

I'm still in the market for a good 22 heavy barrel target bolt action rifle, but that's a conversation for another post. I will need a deer hunting rifle for this season. Hope to hunt for the first time this year. Before then, of course, I will be at the range.

I ask about this rifle specifically because Dante's has it on sale for less than 400$. They have the 30-06 and 270 both with and without scope available on sale.

I'd love to be able to afford a Howa Alpine rifle with their HACT trigger, but it's not gonna happen.

What are your thoughts? Ideally I'd like to buy in the ballpark of 800$ with a half decent scope.

Thanks for your insight.

M.

I know for a fact they are worth less than $400 because someone is selling them for less than $400. You can certainly get it a half decent scope with the rest of your $800.

Mossberg rifles are junk. Do yourself a favor and buy a Remington 783. Much better firearm overall. Throw on a Nikon Prostaff and some new rings and you're golden.

Thanks for your input.

Junk, but worth 400$... Noted!

Although, I've heard the same comments regarding 783s and Savage, and others. I realize they don't compare to higher end quality rifles, but I'm still never sure what to go by. A simple comment like "junk", with no explanation, is about as useful as... something not useful.

Does any one here own a 4x4 or have something a little more constructive to add. I noticed it is a pretty old model, no longer in production. In fact it was replaced by the Patriot line. Which seems to be relatively popular, as far as entry level hunting rifles.

I've seen most of the low end models:
Remington 783
Mossberg Patriot
Ruger American
Savage Axis
I believe CZ has a lower end offering also. I'm sure I'm also forgetting some.

I have not seen a 4x4 and this is the reason I'm here asking all you experienced hunters.

Like most, I'm looking for one rifle that will do it all, be accurate, reliable, easy to maintain and hold together over time. Something that can handle a day at the range up to 300 yards, and a walk in the woods searching for deer for less than 1000$.

Asking for too much, obviously, but I rather ask now and get as many options as possible before getting into it.

OP look for a good used Weatherby s2. I have 3 of them, all shoot under .5 with handloads, ( 243,257wby mag,30-06). An it will have a better resale value down the road if I ever sell them. Even a good used rem 700 or win. 70 is better then some entry level rifle.

OP,
I can't give you any advice on the 4x4 as I've never owned one (or any Mossberg rifle). The reason for that is i don't like how they feel.... (cheap).

If it's what you want, then buy it. All the economy rifles are just that...rifles, they will shoot bullets and hit targets. You don't need to spend a lot of money these days for accuracy, but a bit more $ will get you a Slightly better product.

Prophet River has a couple Ruger Americans for $479 no tax/shipping till tommorow.
North Pro has the TC compass for $412 (after rebate)
The Remington 783 can usually be found for around $400
WSS has the Browning AB3 for $469 (after rebate)

I would personally use any one of these before the Mossberg.

I'd check the EE right now.
Screwwie has a 30-06 with a 3200 for $500.
The offering Griz358 Browning in 30-06 is there too.
Far better rifles than the Mawzzburg.

If I had 800$ I'd be cruzing in EE like crazy for a rifle scope combo. Or post a wtb add. A ruger or weatherby will show up in your ball park.

There are a couple nice Parker Hales with and without scopes on the EE - that would give you a great value within your budget. It would make a great first hunting rifle, including my first and still current rifle. I keep looking at new rifles, but I usually always grab the old Parker Hale and drag it through the woods year after year.

You seemed to have read all about budget guns, so you must have come across write-ups about Mossberg rifles - they would certainly be the last on my list from what I have read about them.

Which of your selection would recommend?

My key concern is reliable, accurate, easy to maintain/repair.

From my experience, based on the ones I noted and your key concerns, I would pick the Ruger American followed by the AB3.

I've bought, tried & sold enough rifles to know that the budget rifles are just that.... budget. But I do understand there is a need for them with the cost of higher quality rifles these days.

I would suggest you try a few different ones and see what you like. Best not to overthink it.

The Ruger American in 06' or 308 is $479, add a Nikon Prostaff II 3-9x40 for $249 + some rings (all at PR) to your door for under the $800.

I've got to shoot all the budget rifles on the market and I'm a mossberg fan. However their center fire rifles are not up to the mossberg name. The atr the 4x4 and the current Patriot are the lowest of the entry guns quality wise
The rem 783 or a savage will generally out shoot them 100% of the time
A savage can be easily upgraded as time goes on and budgets increase

Personally I hunt with a Stevens 200 25/06 and a savage 111 300wm
They are great hunting guns and very accurate
I also hunt with a very nice custom rifle as well

Many ppl will look down on any entry level guns. Some have their reasons others tend to gravitate to higher end tools
Maybe spend some time at a range and try several brands

The last mossberg I shot the owner was proud of his 3.5" group at 100 yards. I took 3 shots before I was able to break a clay pigeon

It would certainly work out to 200 yards on a standing deer. It depends on how you want to set your standards
270 is a great deer cartridge offering flat fast trajectories

CZ doesn't offer any centerfire rifle in Canada for under $1000. They introduced the 557 series which is a cheaper rifle than the 550 series but its still an expensive gun for what it is. The 550 series is still in production but for magnum calibers only. These rifles are almost $2000 now.

The 783 is a great shooting rifle. Just the scope they come with are worth tossing in the garbage. With a budget of $800, you could buy a 783, toss the scope, and buy a $300 Bushnell 3500 Elite, Leupold VX-I, Vortex Diamondback, or Nikon Monarch. If you wanted to save money on the scope to buy ammo. There are several good offerings in the $200 price range. The Vortex Crossfire II, Bushnell Trophy, Nikon Prostaff, and Burris Droptine.

That's some very useful information. I'm think the general consensus is that Mossberg might not be the right choice for me, I think I will seriously consider the Ruger American or 783.

In fact, there's a Ruger 77 The in 6.5 creedmore on EE. 800$ which wouldn't leave me any budget for a scope.

I hope to make my choice soon to make sure I'll have time to practice and find the right cartridges for this year's deer season.

There is a R.E.M. 700 sps in 7-08 on the EE for 650$ shipped with scope rings and dies.
And a win model 70 in 30-06 for 500$ with a 3x9 scope
