I've shot 30.06 for a few years, carried an old 8 to 9 pound rifle through the bush and it always delivered, bought a much lighter .243 for deer this year and probably gonna borrow my dad's .270 for everything else, I'll use the .308 for my yearly trip for elk in Medicine Hat, never hurts to have a few different choices.
 
Had to be said so there I said it! 10% more awesome than a 30-06 too.

A few years ago I would have begged to differ, but I'm starting to think O'Connor was right after all. With the right ammo, it's point and shoot out to 300 yds and a bit beyond, recoil is nothing, and the barrel only needs to be 22". There's only a few species on the continent that it's not suited to. But my favourite is still the 7x57.
