I was thinking of getting the a decent 1-4x since they're in my budget or should I save up for a 1-8x. The scope would be going on my tavor and used mostly just for range use. What would you recommend? Would 1-8x be overkill for range use? Just want to buy once and not have to buy again down the road. Also the 1-4 is a second plane reticle and the 1-8 is a first plane reticle.

As someone that owns a 1-6x, a 1-8x and is strongly thinking about a 1-7x I would advise you get the best glass you can above all else
I am also of the opinion that all other things being equal (glass quality, eye relief etc) more magnification is better, it also doesn't hurt to have it as there will be occasions where it will be useful
Personally for reaching out to any sort of distance with accuracy a 1-6x is the bare minimum

I like having the max limited to what I want to throw it to.
What I mean, is that during my 3gun matches I like to have 1x and 4x.... so I can easily throw from 1 to 4 and visa versa. If it was an 8x then I need to pay attn to placing it on four.
If you are just doing slow fire at a range where you can take your time and play around with the settings then a wider range seems preferable.

If you're going to be hunting areas where there's heavy brush as well as opportunities for long shots you need both ends of the spectrum covered.
A quality 2-7X is a good compromise.
If your pushing through the thick stuff then a 1-4x or a fixed low power in the 1 to 3X range or even iron sights or one of the various laser/optical sights.
For my old eyes irons are not an option.
If it's all open clear cuts the 3-9X or beyond is called for.

I'm currently getting used to a Nightforce NXS 1-4x24 that I recently got. Very nice scope all around, I will be using it on the .375 H&H that I'm building. FC-3G reticle is a perfect ballistic match to both the .308 Win and .375 H&H. I do wish it had a bit more magnification on the top end though. Contenders for me were the Nightforce 1-4, Leupold VX-6 1-6 and Trijicon 1-8. Got a nice deal on the EE for the Nightforce so I went with that.
This guy is definitely not a cheap glass subscriber.
I'd love to get a Nightforce scope.

It's not every day you get to say this about Nightforce, but in this case, it was the cheapest option, by far. Keep scouring the EE for them, a good deal comes up every now and then. Mine had been used for a year on an AR but was LNIB, came to about half of new and worth every penny.
We splurged on a Leupold 3i 3.5-10X40 for the zytel ruger 77 mkii in 300 win as paw dropped the gun while climbing a rock face and did a number on the incumbent vx1.
It's off to korth for repairs now and will be a spare when it returns.
The level 3 Leupy is beautiful glass and we can't help wondering what a level 6 would be like.
Maybe we should 'forget' next months truck payment and get one.

It's always worth while to save up for the scope that you want, because you'll end up losing money buying then selling the 1-4x as a 2nd hand scope which at the end will cost you more money to get to the same end result.
Keep in mind the 1-4x is a 30mm tube and the 1-8x is 34mm so you'll need different mounts, which again costs you more money if you were to go for the 1-4x first.
Buy once, cry once.
