1-4x or 1-8x scope?

I know it's tantamount to sacrilege but I maintain the glass in our 2 bushnell elite scopes is better than that in our leupold vx2 for less money.
Had a lower power one on a 336C for years and it took a lot of pounding as my brother used that gun to push swamps for deer and hogs.
A few dents on it but it still worked.

I ran a Bushnell Elite Tactical 1-6.5 FFP BTR1 reticle for a couple years on my AR. It is a very nice scope, good glass and a decent reticle compromise for short and long range shooting. My main complaint was the weight (34oz with P.E.P.R mount IIRC) it added to my rifle. The one issue I did have with the reticle is, it is supposed to be zero'd at 100y if you want to use the graduations in the reticle. Personally I prefer a 50y zero.

I mostly shoot 50y, occasionally out to 100y, so I removed it, and use an Aimpoint PRO now.

The POI with a 100 yard zero is nearly identical and not worth worrying about. The PEPR mount is a fat pig at over a half pound, use a lightweight mount like those from AERO or ADM to shave the ounces.

Zero at 50y gives you POI within 1.5" of POA, from 25y out to 225y. Zero at 100, and you only get from 35y to 165y to stay within 1.5 inches. Personally, I like 50ys especially with a red dot.

The PEPR is heavy, but the Bushnell scope is 23oz alone. Too much weight for a 50y gun.

The zero scheme for 50/2xx yards is highly dependent on the ammo and the barrel length/velocity. You can't be any more precise than the 2/4MOA of the reddot anyway and that's if you're on your game and using match ammo. Not to mention a reddot sight is not a precision aiming system to begin with. If you're into precision then a reddot is the wrong optic. If you're into precision then you best be using match ammo. If you're into precision you're shooting from a supported position primarily so weight is less of a concern. I agree that a 50 yard gun with a 23oz optic is just not worth the weight penalty.

The 100 yard/metre zero gives you effective point and pull hits on an 8" plate to around 230 yards without compensation. The beauty of the 100 metre/yard zero is that all shots land below your POA beyond 100(albeit slightly from 100 to the 160 mark but still below) which means you'll always be holding high. A hold at the top of the target means you'll make a hit or see splash falling short.
