Why you ask, because we can.....

Latest project is converting a 5 shot semi-auto SKS to a 5 shot straight pull bolt action rifle.

No collector SKS was hurt in the making of this latest project, a junker was found and rebuilt.

Okay, step one

Remove everything that's forward of the receiver that is attached to the barrel with the exception of the rear sight which also is the magazine fore latch.

Gone forever.....the bayonet and front sight assembly, the gas tube and rod, grind down the rear sight, plug the port in the top of the barrel, weld the receiver gas sleeve permanent so you no longer have the makings of a semi.

You now have a straight pull bolt action rifle.

Step 2

Making it worth the effort.

Spit and polish, making a bolt extension and adding a few finishing touches.

A poster suggested that I should copy a K31 so thanks to Corwin who stocks K31 knobs, I decided to change the charging knob to a factory model.

Here's a video of shooting the bolt action sks and it's turned out to be a fun gun to add to our collection of mods.

Very bold , and well done.
If I may ask , why not use the bolt handle as is ?

I find that you have to reach too far forward and it didn't seem natural to me. At the same time I didn't want to have the extension be so far back at to pass the back end of the receiver cover. That way you should be able to keep the gun shouldered and work the bolt without fear of poking yourself in the eye. It should also make a very fast action, inasmuch as it is spring assisted on closing. :)

I am liking this project. How did you deal off the gas hole? Did you just leave it open?

Not sure if modifying the old mag is legal though.

Now this is just a thought, would like to hear from the experts: If someone were to get a new FRT for a bolt action sks it could have 10 rounds which would also conveniently fit into a semi auto. Is this possible?
Also does that mean you manufactured a new gun and could cut the barrel shorter while keep 26" OAL? I would love a bolt action 26"OAL in 7.62x39

I will restore the original to 10 by removing the pin.

You are manufacturing a prohibited device if you do that. The magazine was designed and manufactured for an autoloading rifle, and is therefore limited to 5 rounds.
If you were to alter the rifle to accept 10 shot 7.62x39 pistol magazines you'd be good to go.

Several years ago a gentleman figured that if he were to alter an SKS to bolt action, he would be able to get 30 round after market SKS magazines marked for use in bolt action rifles, and make a killing peddling the magazines. Didn't fly even though he went to court.

The key element to your thought process is aftermarket 30 shot "removable" magazine and it would not be advisable to modify, however (and let's be clear here, we are doing the same as the authorities would do and that is interpret the writing of the law) a fixed magazine is part of the gun and in my opinion (and my opinion goes back more than 4 decades when John and I founded Marstar in Hawkesbury) the gun is now legally a bolt action rifle.

The gas hole in the barrel is on an angle and I treaded it, inserted a screw with the bottom end angled the same as the gas port to maximize the used tread, mig welded the top and sanded it flush and polished prior to cold blue. The receiver end wad completely weld filled and is now a solid piece of steel.

The gun may be a bolt action rifle. The magazine was made for an autoloader. Just because the rifle is now manually operated, this does not mean that the original SKS magazine is now a bolt action rifle magazine.
Run your opinion past the SFSS. You have no doubt had dealings with them in the past.

According to big brother,
"Magazines designed to contain centrefire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a semiautomatic rifle are limited to five cartridges. "

Detachable or not what you did to the rifle afterwords is completely irrelevant. Cool project though.
