help me pick a striker-fired wonder-9

I was offered a Glock 22 gen 2 for $400 today. Good deal?

I know it's a .40, but I can live with that.

It isn't a bad deal. About what it's worth.

I think lots of guys are dumping .40 due to current fashion and cost of ammo compared to 9mm.
If you handload pistol ammo (which you probably should) the added cost is minimal.
If you don't handload pistol ammo, and have zero intention to, stick with 9mm - imho.

I've owned and used most strikers out there and am a lefty as well. Glocks of all calibers still reside in my safe, as do a few H&Ks.
The M&P is a decent pistol as is the Springer XD - they just got squeezed out as I prefer the Glocks.
Haven't tried the Walther, but I'm not in a rush to either. It may offer a better trigger out of the box, but you can always upgrade a Glock as part of the beauty to them, in addition to their simplicity and dependability, is the size and variety of the aftermarket that supports them.

Go for it, you can buy a 9mm barrel down the road and shoot either or.....
The best thing about Glocks is they make you a better shooter, once you master the glock trigger everything else is a cakewalk.
Some people are natural glock shooters but for the rest once you get it it's a transferable skill.

I recently sold a Gen3 G22 on the EE for $500 and it got a lot of response. Even though .40 is sort of fading, the demand is still there.
As long as the gun is mechanically sound, $400 for a Gen2 is a good price. You won't lose much on it if you were to sell it down the road. Don't worry about the finish. Glocks look better dinged up! Look at the new NiB offering!

Oh yeah, this. I always forget that you can get conversion barrels for the 40's. Which is funny considering I used to own one.

I personally really really like .40 S&W. My only issue with the Gen 2 is the lack of casing head support, which may result in kabooms with reloads. That's usually bad news for reloaders, but if you use only shoot factory, its not a biggie.

My other beef with Glock is their polygonal rifled barrel. Glock warns against using lead projectiles due to heavy leading, again, bad if you're a reloader.

But you can buy a regular rifled barrel for it. And a 9mm conversion, IIRC. I wonder if the 40 caliber mags will hold 13 or more 9mm, hmmm.

Anyhow, IMO, $400 is a good deal assuming the pistol hasn't shot more than 10,000 rounds.

I've tried every strike fired pistols under the 700$ price mark, I would never go with them, I own only two in my collection of niners, my number one choice is the Walther PPQ, I would have bought two of them but I wanted something different for my backup, number two is HK SFP9. I longer hesitate to get a third one the Sig Sauer P320 but I'm glad I didnt, I will be waiting to see the next Glock Gen 5 to see if I pick a third one or not.

This may seem a stupid question, so sorry for that, but are all Glock 22 mags compatible across all generations of the Glock?

Also, will a Glock 17 barrel drop into a Glock 22, or if I want a second 9mm bbl, do a need an aftermarket purpose-built 9mm bbl to fit a g22 slide?

I will ikely buy the gun, seller just told me he'd let it go for $375. It also comes with steel trijicon sights, 3 mags and a mag loader.

Heck of a good price!
Yeah, all gen G22 and G17 mags will fit and work. I don't recommend a G17 barrel. The bushing area of the slide is for a G22 .40 barrel and is wider than a 9mm opening. The G17 barrel may work but will have a lot of movement up front. I really don't know for sure but I won't recommend it. The Lone Wolf is what I use and it's a thicker barrel to properly fit the opening.
Only thing you really need to shoot 9mm is the barrel. You won't need to change the recoil spring either. And you can use the .40 mag for 9mm. Just don't drop them, the 9mm rounds don't grab as well and may spring out.

This may seem a stupid question, so sorry for that, but are all Glock 22 mags compatible across all generations of the Glock? Yes. Assuming you don't have a Gen 4 converted for left hand mag release. Gen 4 mags (all that's currently produced) are backwards compatible across earlier generations, but earlier mags don't have a notch for left hand mag release. With a Gen 2 you should be good to go.

Also, will a Glock 17 barrel drop into a Glock 22, or if I want a second 9mm bbl, do a need an aftermarket purpose-built 9mm bbl to fit a g22 slide? No. From what I understand the slide will actually lock back if you try to use an OEM 17 barrel in a 22. So your options are an aftermarket barrel, or a complete slide.

I will likely buy the gun, seller just told me he'd let it go for $375. It also comes with steel trijicon sights, 3 mags and a mag loader.

Just a word of warning if you decide to go for a Glock from a fellow lefty.

I was looking into trading my SFP9 for a Glock 17 gen4 so I tried the Glock at my local range.

It really enjoys throwing brass at your face. Very weak ejection pattern. Had a shell come down and behind my safety glasses and burn the corner of my eye.

Bottom line, I kept my H&K.

It's a very good price but I suggest that you try the mag release before buying. I am a lefty too, I had a G22 and I had a hard time pressing the mag release without breaking my hold on the gun, that could be even harder for you with your thumb injury. Maybe a bigger release would be a solution.

IMHO the best mag release for someone who cannot use his thumb is the paddle release on a PPQ M1.

Where do you shoot in Ontario?

OK

I shoot at Grenville Fish & Game in Prescott.

I ended up buying the used Glock, but don;t have it yet pending transfer in Ontario (eee-gads!). I tried the mag release and it's not too bad. I can drop the mag the same way I do on a 1911.

I took a good look at the gun itself today. The slide had some cosmetic finish wear, nothing severe - just honest holster wear. I suspect it may have been a police trade-in, the grip had scuffing on it that would correlate to having been worn a lot on the right hip and the gun came in/out of a holster fairly frequently, like a cop would do after a shift. But mechanically it looked excellent. Maybe it was only used to qualify from time to time.

It also has old-school tritium sights where the front looks to be factory staked. So that lends weight to it having been part of a police order.

Should be a fun gun. Now to decide if I want to buy an aftermarket 9mm barrel for more flexibility. And maybe some newer mags with fresh springs, etc.

Is it a good idea to replace the recoil spring on an older glock?
