Hey Guys;

Well, what can I say, other than I like this rifle!

I picked it up yesterday from SFRC and put an Elite 6500 1.25-8x32 on it with a GG&G 35M QD mount and headed to the range today.

Now before we get started, I will freely admit that I am not a great shot and the stock trigger definitely needs to be replaced, it's typical AR15 factory bad, chuckle.

Today I tried 7 different types of ammunition.

They were;
Hirtenberger Surplus
Norma Match 168 grain
FNM 80-7 NATO ball surplus
R1M1 ball surplus
Hirtenberger 165 grain soft point
Federal 150 grain soft point
Federal 180 grain soft point
I also had MFS and Chinese ammo with me, but ran out of time to try them.

I bore sighted the rifle & used Hirtenberger to get close @ 50m & took it out to 100m. Once I adjusted to be just high of the point of aim, I switched to Norma Match.

And then fired a couple more groups with the Norma Match.

Groups with the other ammo varied. The ONLY ammo it did not like was FNM 80-7 NATO ball. It failed to fully extract & eject the spent case prior to trying to chamber a round. It did this 3 times in two 5 round mags. I thought it might be the IMI mag I was using @ the time, so I stayed with the mag to eliminate it as the cause. I continued to shoot the other 6 types of ammunition with no issues. 100 plus rounds fired in total.

Here's a rapid fire group with a bunch of R1M1 ball surplus.

If you're using XCR-M mags you may have to make a minor repair to the spine of the mag on the left side because the specs between batches of XCR-M mags seems to vary in this location. With my rifle & the XCR-M mags, the bolt release hit this edge and prevented the bolt from being released on some of them. A quick dremel fix solved the problem. Similarly if BCL was to put a radius on the bottom left side of the bolt release which pushes down on the mag follower, the issue would be resolved.

I've had a couple folks message me with concerns over modifying mags 'to fit'... Just for the record, the XCR-M mags FIT AND FUNCTION fine with the BCL-102 untouched.

Fixed mag on the left, untouched mag on the right.

Here's all 5 of my XCR-M mags after I fixed them so the bolt release clears that left edge on the mag's spine.

Thanks for the report Jay! I am loving mine as well, this thing was doing fantastic with 147 gr Hirt considering the ass factory trigger and my lack of a bench.

With the decent exchange rate, I'm already ditching the trigger because this gritty, heavy milspec one drove me crazy. Brownells has the CMC 2-Stage trigger for like 10% off right now, I also added a Luth-Ar Carbine stock that works with our buffer tube to give a little better cheek weld.

Super jealous you got your ODG, haven't even got a shipping notice yet. The Norma groups look pretty good, the best one looks to be in the 1" range?! I'm guessing the other ammo shot wasn't as good but can you give us an average?
The accuracy potential seems to be there as well as reliability(feeding at least).

P.S You forgot to say half-assed range report :)

Agreed, the factory trigger has to go @ some point! I'm thinking of going to the A2 fixed stock, but I will wait to see what others do.

The other ammo grouped decent. Varying between 1.5 and 3 inches. I fired some 3 shot groups & others I fired 5, 10 & even more rounds @ a target. Ya, it was half a$$ed, but I had so much fun doing it!

Cheers

Agreed, the half-a$$ed ones are usually the most fun! Anything else that stood out, general impressions etc. Both good and bad.

Recoil is very manageable.

The brake is effective but the guys @ the benches beside me said they could feel the blast & it was louder than a regular 308.

Cheers

I like this rifle and the idea of another Non-Restricted black rifle (oh how I like black rifles)....... having said that I must express my opinion that group is well....MEH!.......not poo pooing your effort, but from match ammo I would expect more. Many more firings with shoot the barrel in and accuracy should improve regardless of any other mods so repost results after 400-500 rounds.

Tell me you at least changed out that A2 pistol grip?

I didn't... Not yet anyways... That grip, the trigger and maybe the buttstock will get changed.

Sqr, the trigger is bad. Gritty, heavy... Needs to be replaced with a good one...

Cheers

Surprised there was a problem with the FNM ball. Shot and sold quite a bit of it. Did well in a M-14 that I had set up with NM spec bedding, etc. (Real one - a TRW).

I have got some 150, 165, and 180gr handloads to try out as well as my hirtenberger, and norinco surplus for when mine decides to finally arrive :)

I think if a real target was used, as in one with a precise point of aim and some form of calibrated grid it would be easier to tell what the rifle shoots like .
Disappointing but not surprising that the mags need some mods, it seems that AR10 style mags have this problem. I had to mildly mod my mags for my Modern Hunter . I wonder how many guys are going to scream about that?

Probably many will complain. It is the nature of the beast.

I wonder who discovered that mod :p
