The Great Survival Rifle / Pack Rifle Experiment of 2016/17

sorry, yes, i did the accuracy test in the cold weather and it went good.
i decided to wait until good weather and do it a 2nd time to see if there was any difference.

i also have been inflicting the guns on anyone who i can find who wants to go try all 4.
ive been getting some good feedback on them.

im planning to take a day here next week and go and do that summer weather shoot and then finally get the video's and such all done up.

truth be told i already made video's for the last test and the conclusion video but i didn't post them as i kinda wanted to get some nice weather shooting with these guns into the tests.

of course with summer upon us in the high north and wife has been adding more and more onto my list of things to do!

so ill give you a hard time frame for this test, i have 5 weeks off starting in July, so at the absolute worst case scenario i will get the tests done and video's edited and get the results up and online here for mid July. But really there is no reason that i cant go out and do it next week on my 7 days off other than rain of course.

(now we can all look back at the post in Aug and laugh at me for missing the deadline!)

had a 'non gun guy' stop by and was showing him the 4 guns.
he was surprisingly interested in them once i started to talk about them and put them together.
he found the whole pack gun concept very interesting!

bad news - when i went to put the AR7 together it looks like a small roll pin had fallen out at some point and the gun is not able to go back together.
one little pin and the gun is not usable.

not very impressed by that, ive never had a part just fall off a gun before and go missing, specially a roll pin.
isnt the whole point of a roll pin that its springy and tension-ed so it does not just fall out?

im in touch with Henry - sent them a email about getting a replacement roll pin, so i guess ill get to test Henry's customer service out!

emailed Henry US last night at 1:38am
received a email back at 9:58am asking for my mailing address, free part being sent out same day.

you cant beat that kinda service!

now ill time how long it takes them to get it out and all the way up here.
(yes, im OCD)

Good to hear that they are sending out a spare part. I have heard good things about their warranty and customer service. Can you explain in a little more detail where the roll pin is from? I'll have to tear mine apart and see if it is coming loose.

its the bolt that holds the receiver onto the butt stock.
so the twisty piece is held onto the bolt with a tiny little roll pin.

im not sure when mine fell out or why, hell maybe it was never there.
all i know is i went to put it together and the twisty thing fell into my hand then the bolt fell free from the butt and clanged to the floor.

realistically i could have probably just taken a paperclip and shoved it in there and then just trimmed off the what i needed to hold it in place with the ends bent up to keep it in.
but i kinda wanted to test the Henry service center to see how it was for getting stuff up here in Canada.

because im off for lunch and bored and a visual person......

Is that old school 10/22 with Butler Creek folder really that obsolete??? Apart from not being as "cool"......

i like it.
when people find out i have one they offer to give me their old ones for free usually.
its a strange thing.
ive got one that was given to me out in the shop right now, saving it for a rainy day project.

package arrived from Henry Pride today.
13 days to get to me in remote Northern Alberta from the US.
package may have arrived earlier in the week, i only checked the mail today.

they ended up sending me the roll pin and the entire take down bolt and handle as well.
funny thing was the roll pin fell out of the inner bag so i almost lost that one too!

oh, and zero charger for everything.
so i have no complaint about getting replacement parts from Henry.
fast and free, cant complain!

well i have followed the thread and have to say you have done a great job exploring a topic that i quite like to fantasize and play around with.

Now that you have a bunch of better options you should probably sell me that super cool looking 1022 folder so i can test it out for myself ;)

ive made it almost 50 years now without ever selling a gun, im hoping to make it another 50 before i do!
plus how can i fantasize that im B.A. Baracus blazing away with my folding stock mini 14/30 without my folding stock 10/22!!!

so, update Aug 1 2017.

its been a hot as balls summer as im sure you are all well aware!
i am on holidays and i have been waiting for a day that wasn't raining and not over 30 to go out and do some summer time accuracy with the guns.

if you go back in the posts you will see i ordered 2 UGT Bug Buster scopes for the guns and i didnt like them, the eye relief was way too short for me.
so i planned ahead and ordered up a couple scopes from Cabela's and they arrived last week right when i started my holidays.
i spent the weekend and got them all mounted on the guns and looking good.

went out to the range today and started sighting them in with the plan of getting them all zero'd in then doing the summer time accuracy test and...... one of the scope crapped out!
was dialing in the scope and noticed the cross hairs where no longer straight up and down, started wiggling the scope and now the cross-hairs are all messed up off to the side.
scope is toast!

good news is im heading down to Calgary this week for a couple days so ill take it back into Cabela's and get a replacement and bring it back home with me.
so i should be back out on the range with the test next week.

so fingers crossed next week the accuracy testing will hopefully be done!!!

it was nice to get the guns out and run some rounds through them regardless.
after all the testing i did over the winter and spring these guns have been inactive for the last 2 months and i kinda miss shooting them!

ok-a-dok-aly neighbors!

so good news!
got up today at noon (gotta love being on holidays!)
and the kids where all gone and busy.
went looking for the wife, she had left a note she was out shopping and would not be home for a couple hours.
i looked around for my 'honey do' list and i couldnt find one anywhere (at least that is the story im sticking with when she asks!!)
so i had the afternoon to myself.

my hopes where getting high, but i reminded myself that weather could still kill the day.
poured a bowl of cereal and went out onto the deck and not a breath of wind!
perfect day, +26 and not even a whisper of wind!

i had already mounted the scopes and had them ready to go and i launched!
out to the sand pit and spent the better part of the afternoon doing the summer accuracy test.
its all done boys and girls!

im just now doing up the targets with 'OnTarget' and ive calculated the points from the scoring.

i have a some stuff to do this evening but my plan is to edit up the video and then post it and my write up tonight (fingers crossed!)

if you dont see it here by midnight then it wont be up till sunday as im off on a 2 day course.

ill admit, nothing better then spending a day shooting!
