I recently bought a few 12 gauge single shots sight unseen. There is one that is having a problem I can't seem to figure out. It fires fine but won't eject the spent shells. I can put a live she'll in and it will eject with force. Fire the shell and I have to knock it out with a old cleaning rod.

I got as far as discovering it doesn't have anything to do with the ejector.

If I pick up the empty shell after it has been fired and put it back in the chamber it is very tight going into the chamber. I've tried a few different types of ammo with the same result.

What could be causing this or is the old gun just wore out?

New shot shells have steel "brass" . It expands but does not contract well. Your gun was likely made in the day of real brass rimmed shells. Take your gun down and polish the chamber with fine steel wool wrapped around a 12 ga bronze brush soaked in solvent. Attach the brush to a section of cleaning rod and use an electric drill to spin it. Polish it for about 5 to 10 minutes. You can finish it up with metal polish like Flitz. This will fix your problem 95% of the time.

While doing the above, feel the leading edge of the chamber with your finger. In some cases, a burr or lip develops over time. It can be removed with a piece of emery cloth wrapped around a wood dowel.

I had a cheap one that did the same. Took a chamber polish for it to work for me. Prior it was ammo picky for ejecting too. Federal was no go. Challenger worked okay but would eventually start sticking.

Sorry, didnt mean to come across like a dikk. I had a Rossi single shot that did the same. I only used the economy box winchester 100rd universal shells as I didnt think it mattered much with a "crude" gun like a shotgun. (They have Aluminum case heads) Once I tried a hi-brass shell my buddy handed me it ejected perfectly. I bought a couple of boxes of better quality ammo and never had the issue again. Polishing I am sure will work too.

I haven't tried "good" ammo but since this is a beater/truck gun it won't likely see any of the expensive ammo. I'm %90 sure all the ammo I shot was steel
