Hi all,

After ton's of research and countless hours combing through this forum, I purchased a Weatherby Vanguard 2 Fleur de Lis in .270 win a few weeks ago. Got a great price and used the savings to mount a Redfield Revolution 3x9 x40 with their Accurange reticle (not my favorite, but thats what I chose in the heat of the moment).

I had the opportunity to feed it various brands and weights so far. In fact, I'm a little sore because today I put 2 of boxes of rounds through it. To be exact, I have sent a box of Winchester Power Point 150g (the cheap stuff, to sight in the scope and break it in slightly), Federal Fusion 150g and Hornady American Whitetail 130g.

Managed to not do too bad i think. Keep in mind, this is my first rifle and have little to no experience shooting. Never been hunting yet, hence why all the practice at the range.

Bellow is Federal Fusion 150g at 100y

Bellow is Hornady Whitetail 130g at 100y (didn't change my zero on the scope, aimed center of the targets) I'm not sure if my rifle didn't like these as much or I was just getting tired and sore. I pulled a couple rounds.

This is the 200y shots I did. Shot these few rounds at the end of each session

These are the shots i took just after zeroing the scope. Winchester Powerpoint 150g. The cheapest stuff on the shelf.

Just thought I'd share my experience.

Side note: wish I had a slightly longer reach on the scope to really be able to see the 200y shots, but most deer around here are shot at about 50-75y. Have plenty of point blank range with any of these loads.

You look to be minute of deer but If you have any more money and time I would keep trying different mfg'ers ammo. your rifle will do MOA (3 shots in a 1" square@ 100yrds) or better., when you find what it likes. Ultimately hand loading is the best way to squeak out every ounce of accuracy from your rig.

But thats a whole new can of fish!

Perhaps try some Remington , federal or nosler ammo

Good luck. Your brused shoulder is your badge of honour.. and hurts less than a brused ego when you miss a buck.
Practice is your friend! Never truer is the saying "great shots are made not born"

I managed three shots under a inch at 200 yards with my 223 hand loads - the problem with the big group at 200 is due to parallax think the Redfield has a 100-150 yard parallax

Thats entirely possible. I'll check that more closely next time I go out.

Keep practicing and the groups will tighten up. Pay attention to breathing and trigger squeeze. Comfortable position is also a must. Dont over practice as a sore shoulder will cause a flinch, take your time between shots. Sometimes getting used to just squeezing the trigger and being comfortable shooting before paying too much attention to hitting the target and getting tight groups will pay off.

Those groups are just fine for hunting and with a bit of practice, they should tighten up quite nicely. Never owned a 270, with both a 30-06 and 6.5x55 in my locker, but you have all you need for whitetail.

So I'm still at it.

I've tried some more brands and bullet weights.
Today was seemingly a breakthrough. A noticeable improvement in my groups at both 100 and 200m.

Finally, less than an inch. A true sub moa group with Federal Sierra Gameking 150gn.

I followed that up with some Winchester Accubond. Only shot two 3 shot groups and stopped because it wasn't working at all... 2" at its best for the Winchester.

Sierra Gameking for the win!

May be two early to call it. I have yet to try some Nosler rounds. They are pricey and hard to find.

Honorable mention to the Hornady Superformance (think that's the name) SST bullets in 130gn. Also did 3/4" - 5/8" groups, but flyers were a little less predictable. (I guess that's why they are called flyers).

Dante's (here in Mtl), has some really good sales on scopes and other things.

I picked up a new scope.

Nikon Prostaff 5 3.5-14x50

Hope it'll fit the medium Leupold steel rings I currently have.

I'll put my Redfield on a 22LR. Gotta get one of those soon. Guess that's a conversation for another day.

...or not, Dante's has a couple deals on 22LR also.

Looked at a Marlin XT-22, or the Remington 597HB. Both were well under 300$.

I'd love a bolt gun, but can't really afford a CZ 452, but wonder if a HB option would be better for a long day of shooting. Interested in a B22 FVSR also. I'll post this question to the rimfire group.

Great info thanks, I just picked up a Weatherby Back Country in .270 win. Will have to try out the Sierra.

I have yet to try the Sierra in 130, or the Nosler partition options. Bruised shoulder is keeping me away from the range and noticed I started to flinch more and more. Need more practice.
