Recommendations???

Hard to beat a Barnards or P
maybe the best price for a custom action check out Hirsch Precision, Peter Dobson

First thing is to decide if you want to go with something factory, or "custom" action, and single shot, or mag feed.

Barnard is very popular on F-class and TR rifles.

Single or mag, wouldn't matter.
I love big calibers
338 lapua but that could get costly.
U used to have 7mm rm but PIA to reload belted magnum.
Bench shooting will be the most. Maybe some prone.
I'm just seeing what actions and brands people recommend.

Can anyone recommend a good Long range action?
Rem
Savage
Tikka
Sako
Stiller
etc etc

thank you!

Mike.
I think I would avoid Sako....they make terrific rifles but there seems to be significant debate on the interweb regarding the precise thread measurement required/necessary when rebarreling. Not that there are not a lot of guys who are quite happy to tackle it.....even if they are only 'close'.

Just remember to factor in that a new M700 action, and then getting it tweaked (trued) may be similar in cost to a basic Stiller action that is already trued.
I have a few actions, Savage, M70, M700, Cooper (3 lug), and Stiller (my Stiller came with a 20moa base too). If i was doing another, on a somewhat lean budget, for target, i would do a single shot Stiller - if Price wasn't a concern, Barnard....
But as mentioned many times before, what you choose will depend on your needs and budget - personally, i would budget for the combined the cost of the action and a really good barrel.

I was at a local gun shop today.
Guy behind counter showed me a really nice Rem 700 with a short heavy barrel and HS stock, it was priced at 999.00
Then he showed me a very nice Tikka T3x in .243 with a stainless heavy barrel, that was a lot more pricey at 1299.00

I liked both and would love to know what you think. I can't decide.
Custom action and overbuild looks to pricey for now at least until I decide long range or rifle is for me.

I will mostly shoot Paper or steel. 200 to 300 yards but still want capabilities to shoot 500 ++ yards.
Figure I can put the money into good glass to start.

My current target rifle is built off of a dead standard Tikka T3 action and I would recommend them for the money. In saying that, there is literally nothing wrong with any of the actions on your list, just depends on what you want out of the rifle, what type of competition you want to shoot, how far you want to shoot, etc. Application, application, application... Decide your application first and then build around that.

Here is the thing about buying a Barnard P, I have two of them and I am sure I could sell them both for more than I paid for them. Something to think about as you will not sell any other action that has been talked about for anywhere near what you pay for it. If you are a gunnut you will keep spending until you get to the top, so you may as well jump a few steps. Just saying

I purchased a Tikka T3x CTR 6.5 cm
Those customs are crazy expensive
I'll put the money into some glass

If your gunsmith is afraid to "tackle" a rebarelling job on a Sako, he is grossly incompetent and has no business in the business.... Avoid him like the plague.

There is no mystery to measuring barrel threads. Any lathe hand/machinist learns this basic skill early on in his training.

Sako is one of the finest rifles you can buy.

Not that Sako would be my top pick for a long range target rifle, but not because there's a problem with the thread pitch, more because there are stiffer actions out there and with more accessorizing options.

Just about any action that is solid steel across the top of the receiver is a good choice for a long range rifle build. You want that steel across the top of the ejection port to support the weight of your long and heavy barrel.

To this point, the Rem 700 is weak in the ejection port area as is many others, so it's not just a remmy bash. Even savage has actions that are fully cleared like the rem 700. Savage does make single shot actions that are milled for ejection only on the side, and those can make a nice target rifle... again not that I'm specifically endorsing Savage as there are many other actions that share this feature.

Just make sure your criteria is not brand specific and more feature specific.

You want a stiff action first and foremost.

Very good points!
Savage single shot action would be stiffest of them all mentioned but the stiffest one would be Sportco 44.
It even has floating bolt head with 3 locking lugs.( I also have spare LH bolt head for 223Rem as well)
After I retire (one month left) I intend use it to build 6.5x284Win.
