Best Milsurp rifle for SHTF

No 4 Lee Enfield . It'll do anything I need . It won't win many high capacity fire fights , but the best way to survive a fire fight is to not get into one , I hide with pride .
Or an SKS , because I have one , and a lot of ammo .

But isn't a type-81 just a glorified sks? Rather stick with the tried and true sks than the untested Canadian civilian version of the type-81. Better off with a t97 at least we know we can get a few shots off before a jam lol

Careful now Sir, can't you see the Type 81 is going to be some kind of brand new, magical machine that's going to be more accurate, more awesomer, more tacticaller than anything that's ever been granted NR status before! It won't be anything like the T97 fiasco because....because it won't!
I think it's basically a $1K+ SKS-D with stamped steel receiver, folding stock and a pistol grip but I always get yelled at when I bring that up. Well the SKS-D takes available AK mags but you get the idea :D

I was thinking the No. 4 as well, but my M305 18.5" is a full pound lighter, and handier.

For pistol, I'd go with my Ruger Mk.1. It's good enough for small game, very accurate at 50m, and can use everything from sub-sonic rounds to high velocity.

my 1952 or 1954 SKS and my Norwegian K98 in 30-06... both would be going with me.
I would likely have my son pack my Swiss 1882 revolver... damn accurate and with 32 S&L Long, it can take squirrel to fox sized critters with ease. Won't be much big game left after a few months, and the other two would be for zombie duty.

Hopefully we never find ourselves in a SHTF situation. But if we did what Milsurp rifle would you choose to bring along for the ride? Taking into consideration reliability, accuracy and ammo avaibility among other factors it could be very interesting!
Cheers

Funny, alot of folks seem to ignore the ammo availability part, or assume their stash will last forever. Assuming Canadaammo and Canpar dont make it past the end of the world, who is going to feed a mosin, or even the incredibly obtuse selection of a 303 or 8mm mauser. Canadian Tire seems to have a good stock of 308 and 223, so as long as no one thinks to raid the stores after the end o' times, those would be my choice. I finally went all in on 7X57 ownership this year, and what it has taught me is how little of the old stuff and obscure calibers are out there, if Canpar isnt delivering to you, or gun shows arent on. Not even sure the 7,62X39 would last that long, since the number of SKS owners is so high, and the rounds fired seems super high. Then again, according to Mad Max etc, you can always steal theirs....

In the kind of extended power outage where one needs 3 crates of ammo to survive, I suspect I'll die during the first mag change. But if I can hide behind the crates, I might do a bit better, we'll see.

I see this thread and see every pal holder who's first gun was a Russian surplus gun think it the greatest thing since sliced bread as argue there is so much ammo around.. But don't realize that if this kind of situation arose they would be dead anyways.. Bringing an sks or mosin to a gun fight is like taking your dollarama knife to a knife fight, yeas its sharp and cheap and does knife things but doest do them well..

It doesn't matter what you have, If you never spent a day actually training or even practicing living off the grid. You will be in a world of hurt when SHTF... lol...

One major coronal mass ejection from the sun and the world will go into meltdown. With no electricity Cell phones and I-pads will not work, no low fat frappe lattes at Starbucks.

Three months and most will be out of food and the only ones that have a chance to survive are people that know how to hunt, fish, and are familiar with edible roots and vegetables.

Third world countries will do much better than the 1rst world countries because they do not rely on refrigeration and are more reliant on living of the land.

All the PETA chicks will perish because they have no idea how to salt cure or smoke meat and were out protesting instead of planting lentils.

Any rifle that you have ammo for would be the best SHTF rifle.
