Going to the range with a .22 and bigger rifles

I'm new & at this point have a 10/22 and a shiny new gunk covered SKS. Ill be bringing them both and to be honest, I think both, and their little sister a 22-1911 will be all coming routinely. :)

Only in the last two weeks have I taken my centerfire rifles to the range since the last shot was fired during the 2016 hunting season.
Half the time the rifle that sees use is the BSA Martini Int'l Mk II at 100 yards/meters using target sights.

I'm doing the opposite of most here and am trying to stop taking so much to the range. Taking more than 1-2 firearms makes it feel like a chore to me; "I need to shoot X number of targets today with X rifles etc." It's also difficult when shooting in a group as everyone has different stuff they want to accomplish.

Instead, I try to pick one thing that I want to focus on and go do that. My results are better and I don't come away feeling like I didn't accomplish everything I needed (wanted) to. It's only 30mins each way to the range so I can always get back again later.

^kind of my way of thinking. Back when I used to go to a shooting range, it felt like a bit of a treat...so I'd drag out at least 3-4 guns eager to hear them go "bang" for the first time in a while. Between mags, targets, reloads, various distances, extra cleaning at day's-end...yeah..."chore" is the right word. lol Now, a "range" trip means putting my portable bench in the car, driving to a friend's farm with 1 or 2 .22s..and shooting for as many hours as I can cram in. Paper targets, and reactive targets. (usually, clays) That changes if I have centerfire work to do, load testing, scope zeroing, etc. Then it's a different range, just 1 rifle usually...and no 22s.

Do it all the time, spent a few hours today at the range dialing in a Mosin Nagant hunting rifle project of mine & my 10/22 Take-down, the sissy slip on recoil pad is temporary as I'm still healing from a fractured elbow and badly bruised up shoulder and wrist I got in a motorcycle crash. ;)

Ruger 10/22 Takedown Stainless with extended magazine release, volquartsen extractor & a wide view 3-9x scope, forget brand off top of my head right now

1943 Mosin Nagant
Archangel Target Stock
Cheapo bipod foregrip
Trueshot Scope Mount
Nikon Buckmaster 2 4-12x40 Optic
ATI bent bolt handle

10/22 at 50 yards if i hold steady I can keep 10 rounds all touching each other in a small cluster, 50 yard sight in I've got the Mosin placing shots right beside each other shooting MFS 203Gr SP.

Can't wait to take a few Whitetail's and Muley with this setup, maybe a black bear as well if I'm lucky.

I shot a lot of .22 this summer as the fire hazard had us restricted to 100 yards and in. The tightest I could get mine (Savage MkII TR) to shoot with cheap ammo (CCI minimags) is about 1.25" @ 100 yards so I grabbed a 3"x4" diamond gong I pulled off a prize table and hung it at 100. It's the perfect size for PRS barricade and positional practice. I would shoot my match rifle at 2" squares at the same difference and alternate 4 rounds of centrefire, 15 or so of rimfire. Hell, I kept the .22 in the back of my truck so I could stop at the range on the way home form work most days. Great, cheap practice. Now that it's soggy again, I'm going to push it out to 200-300 yards. It's got am Athlon Talus BTR on it with an Xmas tree reticle so I want to practice holding over. Damn thing needs to be cleaned every few hundred rounds though or it FTEs all the time, haha.

I usually bring my .22 when I go to the range, regardless of what else I bring. It's just plain fun to shoot and lately it ends up seeing the most use, great practice and I have been trying to beat the 1/2" at 50yds challenge. Almost had it last time!

you wouldn't want to be seen at the range with a puny 22 :)

^funny.. :) As huge a fan as I am of rimfires, I won't lie....it does feel a bit odd shooting with one at a range where there are SKSs, SVT-40s, .308s and even 12ga. slug guns going off all around you. I honestly have a hard time enjoying rimfires with all that going on around me. Which is probably why I don't belong to a range...and usually only go with my centerfire if I have "work" to do with it.
